I got nuts from the NY chapter of the Am Chesnut Society. Plan was to grow in pots first year and second year to put to the ground. 25 pots planted in good soil. 17 emerged, every one blighted before they were 18" tall and died. Someone told me I needed to get nuts from the KY chapter but they don't have any. I heard Walmart had dunstans, but I haven't gone to check. Still on my list to do, get chestnuts going. I won't live to enjoy but it's all about stewardship.

What about getting nuts from member on here and see if they grow.
Do any of you have chestnut seedling from the trees you have?

I should have some dunstan nuts next year. Myself and a friend drove around last year and collected nuts from a bunch of different trees when they were dropping. Put them in the fridge over winter and plant them in the spring. Only had a few that didn’t do well.

Thanks. That's helpful. Apparently avoiding Chinese chestnuts is something that ought to be done. I didn't know that these 'stunk' until I got it from here. No other site on the 'net mentioned this.

No I don't have any wild chestnuts here nor saplings. All I planted died. Are you offering nuts? I'm more than willing to travel to get some.

The two Dunstons in my yard are setting blooms again. Fingers crossed maybe I will get a couple Chestnuts this year. Last weekend the ones I have on the farm hadn't set blooms yet. 3119F282-A529-4D8F-B9EF-914C6572D1BF.jpeg 642172BD-E725-423C-A00F-0F514339E24E.jpeg

I know the wildlife love chestnut trees..but when they start blooming..they choke me out with their smell. They make me short of breath when i get around when they are blooming.

The Chestnut Blight here in East KY was one of the worst things to ever happen to these Mountains. It’s still common to find some huge stomps of Fallen Chestnuts with small sprouts shooting up around it.

Here is a WONDERFUL video talking about the importance of Chestnut trees to the mountain people.

I had a handful of American chestnut burrs I found deep under a rock shelter about 15 years ago. I don't know what happened to them or I would post a picture.

My grandmother told me stories about bears climbing high up in the big trees to eat the chestnuts when she was a child in WV.
