My son's next deployment will be at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska. I see a bear and moose hunt in my future.

If he takes legal residence, you can do goats, sheep, and grizzly with him instead of a registered guide. His deployment has the potential to save you tens of thousands on dream hunts.

Can you do black bear and moose without a guide? Or are the guides there to keep you from becoming grizzly food?

The only species that guides are required for are grizzly/brown bear, sheep and goat. You can hunt anything else without a guide as a non-resident.
