I am looking for a good all around striker that runs on all call surfaces. There are lots of custom strikers out there, but a guy could go broke buying and trying them ! Any suggestions on a good custom striker ?

I just don't know if there is an all around striker.Different woods produce different tones on different call surfaces.A hickory striker is always good usually ,also a purple heart is good.If I were looking for just one,I would try a custom maker and tell him what I had and see what he would suggest .I always carry a vest full when I go out

Go look at Daniel Custom Calls Facebook. They are pretty good on calls and strikers. See what they recommend.

Like dark clouD said, hickory is hard to beat. Are ya looking for a two piece striker or a solid turned striker? I like diamond wood (laminated). Give a look at Ridge Top Custom Calls. He has some good turned strikers and isn't over priced. If you're looking for a striker that will run wet or dry, check out Cane Creeks cotton mouth.

For an all around I like a carbon or plexi glass striker. You can make your own fairly easy. I usually go cheap, so whatever Wally World has. For me I don't like buying anything custom because I'll end up losing it when I'm in a haste to move on a bird. Left many a good striker in the swamps.

I have a carbon / aluminum tip that plays hell with them, too. It's good for windy days.

I have a diamond wood striker made by Pete Peters that works very well for me. Dad's Custom Calls makes a good copy that I like too. Cane Creek sells a synthetic tipped striker that works good on most calls. These are the three that are always in my vest.

I have strikers machined to send out with the calls I make, simply because it's cheaper and I can buy bulk machined strikers cheaper than I can buy lumber and turn them, which makes my cost to customer lower, and everyone likes that, the best I can tell.

The ones I keep around to send out with my calls are; hickory, ash, or black locust.

occasionally someone asks for something different and I will do that.

I have mine done with "mushroom" tip too, and folks seem pretty pleased with them.

Picture is a cast cactus call I did a while back, and you can see the striker style.

I usually carry personally about 5 different wood strikers in this style.

    Check out CustomSawing.com

I agree that there is no all-around best striker. However, you can buy cheap dowels, cheap tops and inexpensive turned strikers from CustomSawing.com and make your own. That will let you experiment with what's best for you at a fraction of store-bought stuff.
