Default Lever for Bear

Anyone have any input re:caliber selection for the big bears? I'm thinking of trying for a grizzly permit for next year, love my ol' Mauser, but for this particular hunt, was thinking of sticking to the woods/coastal bears, maybe a lever-action is just right.
Right now, I'm looking at the 444 or 45-70; both are good, I imagine, but any feedback/experience would be appreciated.

You can get this caliber in the Guide Gun, which is pretty much a short barrel 336.
