Mini 14 would be okay IMO for varmit, but I would not take one deer hunting. The Mini does not feed hollow points or hydrashocks well (jams up). Standard target rounds (115 gr.) or defense loads (145 gr.) will not have the knock-down power like a heavier rifle. If you are going to use a Mini to deer hunt, you'd have to be close or pop 2-3 rounds in 'em to do any good. Also be prepared to do some tracking....

For your daughter, you might want to look at a 30-30 or .270 for around the same price. I don't know your daughter's age, but mine is 11 and handles her Winchester 30-30 like a pro. The weight is low, the power is enough, and so far it has never jammed or mis-fired.

Glad to hear your daughter has an interest in hunting! Good luck.

The 7.62x39 version should handle what you mention. But cost will be higher than some other good choices. Personal choice,I'm not in favor of semi autos for beginning/ younger hunters.
