I need some help on deciding on which rifle to get my pre-teen son. I was told a 243 was good and recently I was told about a 708. Is the 708 the same as a 7mm or not?

The 7mm-08 is a 7mm caliber bullet in a .308 win case that has been necked down. The 7mm-08 is not the same as the 7mm Mauser (7x57) or the various 7mm magnums, except in the bullet diameter of 7mm (.284)
I would highly recommend the 7mm-08 over the .243 for a young shooter. The recoil is a little more, but the caliber is a lot more effective. As your son gets older recoil will become less of an issue. IMHO, both will certainly kill deer, but the 7mm-08 is more powerful and would give an advantage over the .243 if the shot placement was not perfect. The 7mm-08 can handle heavier bullets as well, so it would be able to handle game larger than deer. Either way, sounds like somebody is going to have a great Christmas!!! |

jcuts explanation is "right on the money"! I agree that a 7mm-08 is an awesome choice my wife just got one a few months ago it is a very impressive round, I don't think there is another round any more accurate they are used from groundhogs to moose, and will kill anything that he's likely to hunt and do it without any "fuss" . You may want to check out this link: http://members.tripod.com/sed88/rem7/ it is a good "take" on the 7mm-08. They are both .308's necked down(one to 6mm(.243) and one to 7mm(7mm-08). They are both accurate, but the 7mm-08 will take bigger game and will easily take deer cleanly.

First, granted, the 7mm-08 IS an awesome round; ballistically comparable with the venerable ol' 7x57 Mauser, which has been used on all continents, and has, at one time or another, dropped about anything that has/had a pulse. Excellent Choice!
Now, just to stir up the pot a bit, of far more importance: the kid has to be able to shoot the thing, AND SHOOT IT WELL!!! All the power in the world means nothing if it's not placed properly-and, given the fact the youngster is just starting off, I'd hate to see them develop a flinch, or ruin that first dream-hunt becuase they were hunting with too much gun. If the cartridge is reasonable, what matter most is using what the shooter can use best. So, since either the .243 Winchester, or the 7mm-08 have enough to get the job done with proper bullets/placement, I guess the real question here is: what can the person in question shoot best? |
