The ole' 270 is seeing its better days. I've had it for over 20 years now. The stock had enough character marks to look like Charles Bronsons' face. It has served me well, antelope, mule deer, elk and I can't count the number of whitetails....
Wife has agreed to get me a new rifle for Xmas.....now the fun part. I think I've narrowed it down to a new 7MM UM or 300 UM. But with all the new cartridges out there, my question is which one is going to survive, 300 UM , 300 SAUM, 300 WSM or 7MM insert designation. All in reality shoot about the same according to the charts. I like to get a new Remington 700 BDL or Model 7. Okay, who has the skinny on this and what do you all think? I plan to use it for elk, deer, caribou and maybe bear... |

I like the .340 Weatherby as a better all around choice. Super balistics. You can find the Alaskan line at very decent prices.

I bought a 300WSM last year and absolutely love it! It was a "Walmart Special" and kicks like a mule, but shoots really well.

I have a 25-06, a 30-30, a 30-06, a 300WSM and a 338 WinMag. I would feel comfortable with all of them on your listed species except for the 30-30. The 25-06 may be a little marginal if bullet placement isn't precise. If I were limited to one, the 30-06 is definitely "the ONE." Frankly, if I went into a gun store I'd make the decision more on the rifle than the caliber. I have a Ruger, a Rem 700, two Win 70 classics and a Marlin 336. I can shoot all of them well, but everyone's different. If, for example, a Ruger on the shelf fit you better than a 700, and one was a 308 and one was a 7mmRem, I wouldn't get hung up on the caliber. Shot placement is the key, and you must be able to handle the rifle to accomplish that.

I would get another 270. I was in the same situation. I went out bought a 300wsm it is an awesome gun, but it is harder than crap to find the shells that arent 40 bucks a box. If you just want a different gun go with the 300wsm or 270wsm.

If she wasn't mad about that, she'd be mad about something else.Let's go huntin. |

Weatherby Vanguard synthetic on sale right now at Wal Mart for 388.99. My stores have the 7mm, 270 amnd the 300 weatherby mag. I like all of them but damn, 45.00 dollars for a box of 20 shells for a 300 mag? I like my 11 dollar shells for the 06 ( :
I have heard nothing but great things about the Vanguard. Right now, it is essentially the same gun as it was back in the Vanguard DLX (minus the wood of course) days. |

Thanks for all the input. I bit the bullet so to speak and bought the Remington 700 Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation rifle in 300 SAUM. I spoke with Basswipe in length on this cartridge and will give it try. That 50 dollar rebate helped some too!! I have several other rifles beside the the 270, A .243 .32 Winchester Special and a .30.30 thompson contender, so this is stepping up so to speak for me. Look out Elk next year!! Now if momma will let me put a scope on it and use it before Christmas, I'd really be happy.
