Default Mossberg 500 turkey shotgun

I am new to hunting and have purchased a Mossberg 500 at Wal-mart. I was wondering what you guys thought about the gun. If there was any modifications that might need to be made. Thanks, Scott

I own a Mossburg 500 Turkey Gun also. Did yours come with the XXFull Turkey Choke? If so, I would recommend using size 4 copper-plated shot. I have had the best results with that. Also, a scope is a nice addition, but not necessary.

I have owned a 500 with 28" barrel since 1987. I have shot thousands of rounds and abused the thing. It still shoots good but is starting to jam up even when properly cleaned and lubed. I can remember weeks shooting 1000+ rounds at clay tarkgets. I have taken all my turkeys with the gun,20+ birds, 9 were 23+ lb birds, some out to 50 yards with a hastings .660 tube. I hand painted the gun about 3 years ago with camo paint. For the last few years all I have shot it is for turkeys and dove. Last year it started jamming and I know it is from use and abuse. I would buy another for a good inexpensive all purpose gun anyday. But I want a short special pourpose, turkey only, gun right with good factory camo now so I am looking at some different guns. 870's and 1300's. I have never had a broken part on the gun. The end sight fell off and after 13+ years of hard service it is starting to jam shells, especially 3" shells.

James

Spend your money on a site system first. Don't rely on just a single front bead. You will then be able to determine what your gun is doing pattern wise.
