Default Mossberg SSI Single Shot Rifle information?

Hi Guys,
I'm considering purchasing one of the Mossberg SSI single shot rifles in .270 caliber. Do any of you have any first hand information on these guns or know someone who uses one? Are you/they happy with them? Any problems? I was really wondering about the weight. I currently have Model 70 in .270 caliber and was looking for something a little lighter and shorter.

Any help would be appreciated!

Safe Hunting,

Dave,

I have no experience with the Mossberg single shot but I do have a .243 New England Firearms single shot HandiRifle in the synthetic Ultralight model. Mine is light as a feather, has a clean, crisp trigger & shoots great. The only knock I have heard on this gun is that some have too heavy a trigger pull. They come in all popular calibers & several different styles. Most sell for about $189 which is a great deal. Not many brand spanking new centerfire rifles are available for less than $200!

My gun only weighs about 5 1/2 lbs so you can carry it comfortably for a long time. However, it does thump you more than a heavier gun would when fired. Still, since it is a .243, the recoil is not bad. Different caliber centerfire & even shotgun barrels are available for this gun at very affordable prices &, if you buy one, NEF will do a trigger job on your gun for free. Overall, I would give it an 8 on a 0-10 scale.

Tell me more about the Mossberg singleshot.

Rob

Thanks Rob, we recently gave away one of the NEF .243s as a Jakes Gun at our NWTF Banquet. They do look like a really sweet rifle. I wondered about the recoil on the gun when I felt how light it was. You're right about the price also!

The Mossbergs came out in 2000 and some modifications were made in 2001 to the trigger pull and some other minor items. They are shaped much like a Ruger No.1 in body, but seem to function more like a hybrid NEF without the hammer. They also have interchangable barrels and will even take a shotgun barrel. I'm told they make a nice Turkey gun? They look very streamlined, but I was wondering about action and accuracy. I think they weigh-in at around 6lbs., but I'm not sure. The only thing I saw that I didn't know if I liked was the 24" barrel. Surely they come in shorter sizes than that?

Thanks,

Ranger Dave
