Out of State Hunt

Just wondering what state some of you would recommend for my first out of state turkey hunt? It would have to be an inexpensive hunt, so I would definitely be looking at public land. I have considered South Dakota, MO, or maybe just TN. What do you think?

Do you want to hunt before Ky opener or after? You want to shoot easterns or other sub-species??
Easterns - TN. is $156.00 ( for all big game) , (4) bird limit, lots
public property,close to home, opens (2) weeks before Ky.

Southwest Colorado is a fantastic place to hunt Merriams. You'll need to apply for certain permits by 2/14 (tel.303.297.1192) South Dakota has some great hunting, but an out of state permit is very hard to get. Usually you need to put in for one, then reapply the next year. BUT, you can hunt the reservations out there. Their cut off is 2/28. Alabama is another good destination as there is lots of land and tags are cheap. I've hunted a bunch of states and to be honest, as long as you're going for an Eastern, it's real hard to beat Kentucky. If you kill a 20# bird in Georgia, they'll put you on the TV! This fall I killed an 18 lb. 2 oz. HEN! By the way, the last edition of Turkey Call has a list of state deadlines for permits on page 41. Good luck!
All in all, I'd probably look at Alabama for a first travel bird. Their season opens well before ours, and the early days can be hit or miss weatherwise and gobbling wise. Southern birds also seem to be just a little more call shy than ours, and friction calls seem to work a little better.

About any state around Kentucky has good turkey hunting (except IN). I am going to go to South Dakota this spring because I really want a Merriam. I may also look into Tennesse and I will be hunting in KY again this spring, hopefully.
