Alright I searched and couldn't find anything in the forum about Big South Fork Deer Hunting.. This is where we have decided to go during Opening day. Has anyone of you hunted here during opening day and how did you do? What area would you recommend and avoid?
I have looked at maps and seen what I think would be good areas and natural funnels with some flat bottom areas in valleys. Thanks ahead of time and any help suggestions is greatly appreciated. Pm me if you don't want to post on the forum! Thanks!! |

The location and availability of camping and amount of land allowed to hunt and access. Would you recommend something else?

Might want to check the laws regarding atv's there. Across the line in pickett state park their is an atv riding area. Not sure about ky though. I would guess it would be against the law. I have turkey hunted every square inch of that country (took several years) I will asay that the deer are not thick, but I have seen some impressive buck sign chasin longbeards. Good luck.

I spoke with the Management and Game Warden down there. They said ATV's are allowed as long as they stay on trails. Which there are a few guys from where I work that go on ATV trips there yearly. They advised me of a nice secluded area to camp and places they have ran into heards of deer in early spring. I know habits have changed since spring but I hope they stay in the simular area and feed in some of the bottoms where they were saw. Your allowed back country camping in South Fork also, you just have to be more than 100' away from any water source!

Well we made the trip.. The woods were great, the camping was wonderful and refreshing to be out there. Got there friday at 10:00am. We went and scouted some areas. Saw some areas were it looked as deer were crossing from bedding to feeding areas up in a tunnel. Thats where I put my climber. My friend went to the bottoms were 4 creeks came together and was very overrun with deer presents. Got up at 5 and was in the stands by 5:45. Daylight comes, playing the waiting game. Sat all day and saw 2 doe. He sat until 3 then started stalking around. We didn't see anything else all week.
We spoke with some locals and they said this place has been overhunted up until 2003 and havent saw much since. When they allowed hog hunting they killed everything. There isn't hogs seen anylonger and deer are far and between. I think we heard 5-6 shots in 2 day.. Hope everyone else had better luck!! Maybe this week will show better! |
