Thread: M1 Carbine Front Sight

    Default M1 Carbine Front Sight

I acquired an M1 Carbine (30 cal) recently and have encountered an issue. Original front sight leaves it shooting several inches high at 100 yards (original design by military). The rear sight is set as low as possible. I'm told that there is a replacement front sight (taller post) for these guns for civilian target shooting, hunting, etc. Does anyone know a good location for acquiring these replacement sights? It holds a pretty good group, just way too high.
    Thanks in advance

You might try the Civilian Marksmanship Program. They are the official US surplus M1 armorers. Someone there may know what would work the best for you. They have a forum as well for M1's.

Thanks Combat. I've been to several sites since this original posting. I'm working on building up the top of the front sight presently. I think that will take care of the problem.

Don't know how high you want to go but if it's not much you can use heat shrink. I have seen it on a few mil surps and works great. Once you heat it, it's fairly hard and the ears on the sight should protect it.

    Just a thought.

I mixed up a little JB Weld and ran a bead on the top. Took a very small file, dressed it into shape and took a black Sharpie marker to it. You can't tell its not original. I'll get it back on the bench/range and file it down as necessary to reach my goal. Color it again and that will be that
