If a crossbow is not archery equipment, what is it then?
I have always bow hunted only, until now. I tore muscles in my right neck area about a month ago and it has affected my mucsles in my arm, shoulder and neck. I still a cannot pull my bow back or even one thats in the low 50# range. I am propably going to go to BPS in the morrning and pick me out a good xbow so that I do not miss any more of the season. My exemption is for this year only but I am going to continue to work on being able to shoot my bow before gun season starts so that I can still use it this year, but until then I will be using a xbow once I get one.

Had shoulder surgery 2 years ago and it still hurts after too much repetition, whether casting throwing etc. Was thinking of crossbow. Is 150 pounds a good draw weight? Do sights matter? Was looking at a cheapie cuz the funds are just not there for a very expensive one.

To some extent with crossbows, just like with optics, you get what you pay for. Try to get the most expensive bow you can (within reason) if your funds are limited.
As for the draw weight, it has more to do with the speed and energy of your arrow more than draw weight. Compound crossbows can generally have a lower draw weight and attain higher speeds than recurve crossbows of the same draw weight. But with the compound type, there's more to go wrong and more moving parts to make noise. Once you reach up around 300 f.p.s., all that extra speed is going to do is bury the arrow a little deeper in the ground on the other side of the deer. LOL!
I've had a screwed up back for several years as well as shoulder problems. Finally got my shoulder cut on, but it's still not 100% right. Got the Dr. to sign off on the crossbow exemption a couple of weeks ago, so now I can get out a little more. Too late to try to get the boy out with me while it is warm though. Maybe next year since I have the exemption now.

I would have believe that the state would not give exemptions to use during archery season if a crossbow were not considered archery. That being said, I'm 52 years, I bow (archery) hunted from the age of seventeen. I as well have FSH muscular dystrophy. I became disabled to the point twenty years ago that I could no longer draw my bow. Not until this year did I find out that there was an exemption. It aggravated me to know that this was available, and I wasn't smart enough to look for the information. You can call it what you want, but I would like to see the state provide information on your tag that would tell everyone to explore disability options as needed. I as well have a great deal of trouble getting in and out of the field, so I recieved a, shoot from vehicle exemption as well. Archery not archery, I don't really care. I have be able to spend as much time in the field this year as anyone that is completely healthy, as I hope you are. I have been able to hunt with my boys for the first ever this year. I don't really care if I ever take a deer with my cross bow. I load up my quad and cross bow and join right in and feel a part of the hunting trip, not just an on looker from a far. There are limits to the shoot from vehicle exemption, but it gets you in the field.

I started bow hunting back in the early 70s. Started out hunting with a Bear re-curve. No sights, no release, no anything but bow, string and wood arrows. Shot Black Diamond broad heads. Could hit an oak leaf on a hay bale at 20yards. (that is what I had to do consistently before Dad would let me hunt). Dad is gone now but my love for bow hunting still remains.
I quit a few years ago because I couldn't shoot my bow without being down for weeks at a time afterward. I gave it up completely. I have degenerative disc desease. Have had 3 discs removed. Facet joints removed on the bottom 5 vertebrae and Diabetic Neuropathy.
After several years of not bow hunting at all I got a Crossbow permit signed by my doctor a couple of weeks ago. I have really enjoyed being able to get back out there. I still love being out there.
If a compound with fiber optic sights, fall away rests, releases, 80% let off, carbon arrows 300+ fps. etc is "archery" then I see no problem with the crossbow. My crossbow is no where near as deadly as some of the bows out there. I have a son that is deadly with a compound. He can hit a silver dollar size target almost every shot at 40-50 yards. IS quiet as a mouse and smooth as silk when he draws. Deer within 50yards are dead on the hoof if he decides to take them. Don't get me wrong. I don't have a thing against modern bows. Nothing at all.
My point is archery isn't just a bow and arrow anymore.
I think it is great that you are still able to hunt and enjoy the outdoors and i have no problem with the state giving exemptions to folks with disabilities to use a crossbow during archery season. I dont have a problem with crossbows when it is crossbow season. But i do have a problem with crossbow hunters who have no disabilities that think they are archers and want to hunt through the archery season. There are people on this forum who say there is no advantage using a crossbow over a compound or traditional archery equipment. but i shoot a compound bow and it does not have a rifle stock that i can use to steady myself on a tree limb or shooting stick, and the last time i looked it doesn't have a red dot or rifle scope on it, and with the poundage these crossbows pull you cant tell me that they are not able to shoot effectively well beyond what true archery equipment can. so i dont need the state to give information on my tag about disability options, if that gives you the opportunity to keep hunting the more power to you.
