Default Duck Call Making - Tips?

    Hey guys,

My father-in-law has recently jumped into making duck calls, not so much to sell them, but for the enjoyment and challenge.

So far he's done very well with them and is turning out some neat looking calls - as for sound, he's hitting a good one at about 1 in 5 right now.

Does anyone else on here make them? Do you have any good resources to pull from with tips, suggestions, or ideas?

As of right now, he's taking the good ones he's made, and patterning them to try and get more consistent. It's amazing how such minor differences between two calls made with the same pattern will have such a varying tone!

Patients and practice, Mix and match materials and good reeds and corks.
To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.

Do you have a local supplier?

He's been ordering supplies through a catalog...

He lives in Golo and works in Mayfield, so he's in your neck of the woods...

He needs to get a jig to file and sand the toneboards the same every time. Just do a search on toneboard jigs.

Negative on a supplier, BTW we know each other.

    Those jigs are expensive!
He actually made his own jig, based off of a tone board from a custom call I had. He used that as his base, and has since filed it a little to modify it as needed, and of course tweek it some.
