Thread: Elk Rounds

    Default Elk Rounds

Just drew an extremely hard to get elk rifle tag (1 of 4) for an area in Montana that is typically a bowhunt only area. The bulls there are huge and I need some help with ammo selection. I shoot a 300 win. mag. and have been using 150 grain Fail Safe ammo for deer sized game with great sucess. Is this enough bullet for big elk?

When it comes to big, tough animals-bigger is better. In the Fail Safe line, Winchester offers a 165 gr. and a 180 gr.--Both would be better for elk. Make your choice on the distance you expect to be shooting. If you think you will be within 250 yards or so, I'd take the 180. If you plan on taking a longer shot than that, I'd want the flatter shooting 165 gr. bullet, although the 180 would pack more punch.

Thanks Multidigits! We can always count on you to help with the answers. I'll let everyone know how I do. My hunt is going to be the week of the 17th of Nov. I think I'll go with the 180.
