    Default Savage 7mm Rem

I looked at the Wal-mart today in Norfolk Virginia and I saw a Savage 7mm rem with a Simmons Scope on sale for 250.00 I think I have a new gun.[:D]

go for it-at that price, whatcha got to lose? I've never heard anything bad about Savage, or the 7mm Rem. Mag., or for that matter, Simmons scopes.

Savage isn't a bad gun. I don't care for Simmons. When it comes to optics, you get what you pay for. I would think that the gun alone would be worth $250. Put a decent scope on it and put the Simmons on a smaller (less recoil) gun.

The scope is crap. Toss it and the aluminum bases and rings and put a good scope, rings and bases on the rifle and you'll be fine. The give away Simmons scope is about a $10 wholesale scope. It might hold up on a .22, but I wouldn't recommend it.

That Simmons scope on that particular gun may be crap, but you can't lump all Simmons scopes in that category. I have a couple of the high end Simmons scopes that are really nice units.

I don't think you'll be disappointed in that Savage. I have one in .270 (didn't come from Wal Mart though) that is an excellent shooter. Many reviews I've read tout them as one of the most reliable accurate guns straight out of the box out there, with a killer price to boot.

I agree that some of the Simmons line is fine. I particular like and often reccomend the Aetec to a lot of my customers. But the package guns from Savage are a waste of money concerning the optics. I made the same mistake on the ML 10 II and had to replace it after about 6 shots or so. I also decided to trade out the mounts while I was at it, because the ones on the package are very cheap repos of the Weaver style mounts made of steel.

If it has the aluminum mounts as Multi has suggested, replace them now. Aluminum mounts will not stand up to the recoil of a belted magnum.

I have a Savage 30.06 I bought in Wal-mart in 1998 with the same scpoe on it. I have killed 7 deer with it and it seems to be doing fine. I have never shot a 7mm Mag, do they kick that much harder than a 30.06? I heard someone say they kill at both ends, meaning they kick pretty hard. I do have a Ruger 10/22 I could put that scope on, What do you all recommend I put on it? I like the 3X9 variable scopes what is a good name brand that is affordable?

I will show my ignorance here about rifles, but is a 7mm and a 7mm MAG one and the same?
