    Default Mossberg 500 shotgun

Hey people I was thinking about buying a Mossberg 500 from my local Wall-mart, but the girl behind the counter didn't know much about them. The mossberge 500 I was looking at was a cammo bird gun with turkey xxf turkey choke installed. After looking at Mossberg's web sit I came to the conclusion that the choke could be replace with an improved choke to shoot slugs or sabots for taking down those big Bucks as well. Does anyone know If my conclusion is write, and is this a standard field barrel that can except any of the choke from the accu set? The price was low at $239 and If I can hunt turkeys and deer (in the shot gun, muzzleloader only units) with it I think it would be a good buy.

Several years ago, I bought a 12 ga Mossberg 500 from Wally World. I believe it came with a Modified choke.

If you want a gun that wont set you back too much to shoot both turkey loads & slugs/sabots, take a look at the New England Firearms guns. You could buy a slug gun & a turkey barrel thru the barrel accessory program. If you wanted to, you could get a Handi-Rifle, in your favorite centerfire caliber, & then buy turkey, slug, & muzzle loader barrels. The barrels are fairly priced, too. Check it out.

I have the same gun you saw. I bought it 3 years ago, and had a modified choke come with it, along with the turkey choke. It's a great gun for the money and I have no complaints whatsoever. You shoould be able to fit any Mossburg-acceptable choke into it.

If it is good enough to be the only pump shotgun to pass military testing it should be good enough for anyone. They have sold a bazillion of the model 500, it's as reliable a gun for the money as you can get. You should have no problem finding any choke you want for it. All model 500 barrels are essentially the same, they just come in different lengths. You can get a muzzleloader barrel for them though.

IMO, the mossberg 500 is a good gun, but... if you ever have to tear it down in the field with cold hands, and all the loose parts, its not my choice of a pump gun. This may not apply to you, I'm a duck hunter and my guns are subjected to harsh extremes that most hunting doesn't subject a gun to ie: very cold, wet, mud, sand. I have friends that shoot 500's and 835's, the are good guns, but I prefer the simple Remington 870 super mag. If you upland bird, rabbit, squirrel, deer, dove. The 500 is a good choice, and they sell fully rifled bbls made by Hastings. These are great for slugs. And yes, many chokes are available. Don't mean to start a brand war, but I've owned mossbergs and the only drawback I have found is the field stripping part. I droped one of the bars in the mud one time, like to not have found it. Just makes field cleaning tougher. Most ppl don't subject their guns to those conditions and never need to clean them in the field.

I have also seen a Mossberg 5oo combo kit for $259.00 that comes with 2 barrels. The first barrel is a 28" field barrel with the adjustable accuchoke set-up on it and the second is a 24" smooth bore, rifle sighted barrel. It isn't camo, but i think I amy go with this set up. Any suggestions?

For another $20 how could you go wrong?

I'm beginning to rethink my reliability comment I stated earlier though. A friend brought one on a duck hunt yesterday and it was pretty much a single shot for most of the day. The gun refused to extract empty hulls. Granted, he needs to clean it good but I've never had a failure to extract with either my 870 or Nova pump guns, regardless of how dirty they were. He had to cut a limb and drive the empty hull out several times yesterday.
