How could I?

[:)]I know it's a little late, but this property I'm hunting is teaming with turkey. What is the best way to get one into bow range right now?

Like I said before, I've never taken a turkey, despite my fruitless efforts. Should I call, if so what kind and how? Etc......

Now thru the end of season is the best time! They can very predictable , esp at a certain food source, and (for me at least) respond very well to my calls. I just repeat what they do to me. If I cluck and they cluck back, then I continue to cluck. I have found that gobblers respond great to a gobbler yelp, they will come right on in. I will use a lost call to see if any turkeys are in the area- if they are then they usually respond. Best hunting is out of one those blinds that Uncle Lee's sells, just sit it up where you want to shoot. One tip though- it is illegal to sit close to that 50lbs of corn you put out(and the turkeys WILL find it! Keep us posted.

Thanks Kyhunter, I apprciate it, so would I need a box, slate or whatever call? I remember reading it's illegal to hunt turkey over bait, I just used the corn to try and get a few pictures so I can figure out that game cam. I have watched the turkey feedup a certain ridge almost everytime I'm out there, it's bout 200 yards from my pile o' corn[:)] What kind of blind are you referring too?

Ha! If you are like most of us turkey hunters you will end up with all of the calls. I would start with slate, box and mouth diaphram. The slate is the easiest to master. However, I use the mouth call more then the others but it will take a little practice to master. You can never have enough calls.

INKY called it right- you end up with all of them, but I use diaphrams the most. The blinds I was refering to were the Hunter's View Wigwam and the Ameristep Doghouse. The Doghouse is water repellent I believe, while the Wigwam is not. 'House is $99 and the Wigwam $69. Someone could have made a $1000 with a funny home movie watching me get my Wigwam back into its carry case today. It nearly beat me to death!!!! Also PB -if the boys in green(CO) catch you turkey hunting within 200 yards of a cornpile, then expect your Christmas turkey to be served at the Crossbar Motel!!!

My hunting buddy tried for 40 minutes to fold up his blind in the woods. Ended up carrying it back to the cabin & left it in the yard for 3 days (trying off & on to fold it up). When we left up there modern gun season, his blind was inside the cabin still unable to put it back in the pouch. My guess is it will still be there next year........he sure does look like a sail boat going through the woods.

I know what you mean. When I first got my Doghouse I did manage to set it up in my family room, in the number of seconds it specified but it took me almost twenty minutes and knocking everything off of the coffee table to get it back in the case. Practice before going to the woods.

I don't suspect the corn to be there long, I just wanted to get some pics w/ the game camera.... (I know, I know I don't have much patience when it comes to new toys)

Baiting is a hot item with the Department. They did 84 cases last spring! The rule is fuzzy, and there is no set yardage. If the movement of the turkey was influenced by bait, it's a baited bird. I hate to think about the scenario where the turkey's roosted on my property and going to the neighbor's corn pile.
I prefer to bowhunt turkeys near roosting areas. In the morning I try to be in their flydown area and in the evening be in an area near their flyup area. I don't have a blind, but it's very important to have something to get behind so you can pull without being seen. Small cedars work well, as do blowdowns. I prefer a recurve, and you don't need much poundage at all. I can draw a 45# recurve with much less movement than a compound. Callingwise, I believe less is more. In the mornings I'll use tree yelps and short strings of yelps. Afternoons I generally don't call unless the flock busts. I prefer a slate and I have a Neil Cost that is sweeeeeet. I also use a Greg Phillips paddleboat (he makes one of the absolute best box calls in the nation and he's right in Oldham County), a Kicking Bird box that has a slate top, and a Knight and Hale paddleboat. I use a bunch of others, but those are my primaries. I use a diaphragm about ten percent of the time. Good luck!
