Although it is a little later in life than I had hoped I couldn't be more excited. I know I have a few more years before I can get her out in the woods but this ole first time dad is going to try and get her interested and keep her interested in the outdoors.

I agreed to teach one of my grandsons how to fly fish. Only have the one rod and reel setup so I need a second. Now what I have found is a old made in the USA Martin that was a left over and is brand new. All the other reels I have looked at are made in China or Japan....I just think the old style reel made in New York is better quality than the others since they were as they say made to last back then.

I did find a good condition rod at a reasonable price...not great but good.

Think I will keep the new rod and reel for myself and pass my old stuff down.

How about you made in the USA or not.

Please give me your opinions on Deer, Turkey, and bobcat hunting. Good county? Bad?
I live in Indiana where the Deer hunting is good, but I'm at least an hour from a huntable Turkey population. I did get a trail cam pic of a bobcat here this year, it's the first I've even heard of in this county.

I charged up my cranking battery last night to 100%. I cannot get the dang thing started. Ran it down to 50% and charging it right now again. I have taken the plugs out and cranked it in case I flooded it and also to get rid of any gas from last year in it. This may be may fault....I didn't unhook the fuel line after my last trip and empty out the carbs. I have cranked it without the fuel line hooked up to clean out the carbs, cranked it with the plugs out, nothing. Not even one puff of smoke. It's turning over fine but just not starting. I'm supposed to be on the road right now so this is plum aggravating to say the least. Glad I tested before I got to Rough River

Last year was my first year waterfowl hunting and I've fallen in love with it, so I'm looking to purchase some more calls. I have a single reed Echo duck call that I like, but I don't have a goose call, whistle, or woody call. I'm not looking to break the bank on an expensive call until my calling improves some more. So does anyone have any suggestions for calls? And has anyone heard of Straight Down Game Calls or Cutt Down Game Calls? They seem to offer pretty decent deals and their reviews aren't bad either.

For some reason I woke up a little before 6am this morning. Not really sure why considering its my day off but I figured since I was up and everyone else would be sleeping for a couple more hours I might as well go fishing. I got dressed, grabbed the fly rod, and drove down to Gunpowder creek. I still had my black wooly bugger tied on from yesterday so I stuck with it and began hitting all of my usual holes. Nothing. I wondered if maybe the fish were hugging the bottom so I switched up to brown bead head wooly bugger. Still nothing. I finally had a follow from a smallie. Not a big one but I watched him swim right behind the fly till he got too close to me then took off back to deeper water. I thought maybe that was a sign that I had the right fly just not the right color. I switched to an olive wooly bugger and tried that for a while but still nothing. The whole time I was wading I noticed little sunfish hitting stuff on the surface. I figured why not try a popper? From there it was game on! I started catching all kinds of these little longear sunfish. They were tiny but they are such cool looking fish. I never mind catching these guys.

It always amazes me how aggressive these little things are. They would hit numerous times before hooking up. Sometimes they would splash just as hard as a bass would. Everytime they would miss it I couldn't help but to think of that State Farm commercial with the old man standing there in waders with a fishing pole saying, "Hohoho, you almost had it! Ya gotta be quicker than that!"

Then after catching a number of the sunfish I finally got the bite I had been waiting for. It wasn't a huge top water hit. More of just a big gulp. My line went tight, I set the hook, Fish on! This time I got a couple good reel screaming runs. I knew it was a good smallie. It surprisingly didn't jump at all but did put up one heck of a fight! Got her in, snapped a quick photo, measured her at 15" and let her go.

With that I was happy and decided to call it a morning.
