State Wildlife Grants - Final Funding Decision
Dear Ronnie,
Last month the Senate Appropriations Committee worked out numbers for several spending bills including those that fund the Department of Interior and other agencies responsible for fish and wildlife management.
The committee approved $75 million for the State Wildlife Grants program. This is $5M more than last year and $7.5 million more than the House put in their bill for this year.
That increase occurred thanks to a letter signed by 52 senators that requested such an increase. The letter and the signatures it carried came about because of good old fashioned grassroots mobilization - thanks to those of you who helped with this effort!
Eventually the bill with this increased funding for State Wildlife Grants will head to a negotiation with members of the House. This is where the final figure for State Wildlife Grants will be determined.
In such a tight budget year (especially for conservation), we need to act to protect the modest increase in the Senate bill. Let your elected officials know that you want State Wildlife Grants Programs funded at $75 million.

Subject: Support Full Funding of State Wildlife Grants Program
Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],
I am writing to urge your support for adequate funding of the State Wildlife Grants program at a level of $75 million for FY2005. These programs support critical on-the-ground work by state fish and game agencies that benefits fish and wildlife and ultimately hunters and anglers.
The Senate Interior Appropriations bill includes $75 million for the State Wildlife Grants. The House Interior bill only includes $67 million. In a tight budget year, this is one program that saves both wildlife and taxpayer dollars through the matching fund requirements. The program needs the full $75 million. Please help ensure that funding stays at this level when the final Interior Appropriations measure is negotiated. Also, please consider contacting Senate Chairman Burns and/or Ranking Member Dorgan and House Chairman Taylor and/or Ranking Member Dicks to ask them to support the Senate's $75 million figure. As a constituent of yours who loves the outdoors and has benefited from these programs, I thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Ronnie Wells

What's At Stake:
Through the federally funded State Wildlife Grants program, new funds are available to state fish and wildlife agencies. These grants provide funding to each of the 50 states to maintain critical on-the-ground conservation work that is essential to ensuring healthy populations of fish and wildlife. This four-year-old program was created as a result of the effort and dedication of the Teaming with Wildlife (TWW) coalition of more than 3000 conservation organizations, including the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Ducks Unlimited, BASS, Boone & Crockett, Izaak Walton League of America, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever, Whitetails Unlimited, Wildlife Forever, Trout Unlimited and the Wildlife Management Institute. The new federal funds continue the precedent of cooperation between the federal government and the states for managing and conserving wildlife species set by the Pittman-Robertson Act of 1937 and the Dingell-Johnson Act of 1950.
