I hate to say it, but you violated the law by not being close enough to hm to take control of the gun. You couldn't do that by radio. I believe this law needs some work but agree that 10 year olds shouldn't be hunting by themselves. It's a lot of work, but hang two stands and sit with the kid till he's of age, which is under 16.

Congrats to your son. There was a boy (13 I think) killed last year in his treestand hunting away from his dad. Too scary for me to try something like that.
I believe this is one of the laws violated more than any other. Mostly because of greed. Dad sure doesn't want to miss out on his opportunity to take a deer. What does everythink think about this law?

my son is 16yrs old, 6' 2" 210lbs and as mature a boy as I know for his age, but it's not just maturity or being responsible, it's also about experience and learning to handle situations, and man can you run into some while hntn. handled it the same way with the 20yr old and will with the 11yr old if she is able, in my eyes at 16yrs. you couldn't have bought one min. of that time from me that I spent sitting next to those two boys.

The law is a good law , but, many kids are "hunting smart" and more safety conscious than the majority of the adults, hunting today!
I know a lot of 30 to 40 year old "adults" whom are irresponsible and careless, and need "adult" supervision.
In a "perfect world",we all should get the opportunity to set beside dad or pap paw in a deer stand or duck blind before we are "turned loose" on our own.

I'am sure Behert's son is responsable young man or he would of not left him alone. I have a 10 year old nephew that is as responsible as alot of thirty year old's I know when it comes to hunting and gun safty. [;)]

" I'am sure Behert's son is responsable young man or he would of not left him alone" - Yet this was his first deer, so how much deer hunting experience does he have. This is a good law and one that should be followed to the letter.

I know your proud of your son and his first deer but I have to agree with the others. It's a good law. Way too many people are careless, both adults and kids, and things can happen too fast sometimes I don't remember which state this happened in but earlier this year a 35 year old man shot his own son with a crossbow while the kid was walking to his farthers stand. The guy though it was a deer and shot at movement. Tha law is put out to cover us all both the responsable and careless ones.

I agree with you concertning the law. I just read where two young teenagers were killed in Indiana in two seprate hunting accidents. One was alone in his tree, dropped his gun and it went off, the other was shot by his friend while taking a break. The first young man was found by his father and brother laying under his tree. Can you imagine.
