I'm looking forward to the discussion on Hunter Ed. I've heard others comment that the current requirement is a roadblock in the circumstances where someone is asked by a friend to go hunting on short notice, and can't because they can't get the course done.

I would think that a computerized "short course" could be developed that would allow a new hunter to obtain essentially a "temporary" good for a few weeks or months, provided they are hunting under the supervision of an otherwise legal hunter (one who has a card or is otherwise exempt). In an hour I would think you could hit the critical elements of gun and hunting safety, and verify it with a short exam on line. They could then be issued a temporary number on line much like a hunting license, so that, at least in theory, they could get the temporary even the morning they would hunt, assuming access to a computer. And I would think the program could identify the ID number used so that only one temporary could be issued.

Anyway, I hope there's something that would meet the real safety issues while not being an unreasonable impediment. Heck, we've got legislators who are required to have hunter ed, and the number of people who are required to have it grows every year.

Just my thoughts offered in a constructive spirit.

Good idea Sky. I hope that on the free weekend for youths in late December, the requirement has been removed all together(it may have been)?

what u get out, is what u put in

Free weekends do not require a license or tag, and also no HS because of that.

Size does matter!
