View Full Version : Aren't wetlands protected?
There are several acres of wetlands close to where I livein Ohio County. This place is loaded with wildlife. I have seen several large cranes, lots of ducks and just about any kind of wildlife here, including deer, black squirrels, even bobcats. My wife even caught a trophy bowfin there.
Well now comes the bad part.................someone bought it. Now they are ruining it. They are starting to log it and it looks like a tornado hit it. This is one of the last good wetlands in this area and I hate to see it destroyed. Isn't there some law against destroying wetlands and if so who could I contact, before it's too late?

I had the same thing happen while living in CA. I used to go to this spot in the city limits of Lancaster, CA and watch tons of mallards, valley quail, rabbits, and you name it swarm to this place. It was in the middle of the desert so water was at a premium. Ofcourse 6 months after finding this place they dulldozed it.

It's sad when a squirrel has to climb a telephone pole to get off the ground but that's what it's comming to....hardly any big timber left around here.
quote:
No law against it if you own it.Thousands of acres have been tiled and drained for agriculture. The government will pay you if you have a wetland and sign it into an easement (WRP).You cannot really stop it.Also, cutting trees isn't necessarily bad, although ducks do like mature trees to nest in.

Not so. If it classified by the FSA as a wetland, there are rules that apply to what you can or can't do even if you own it. Cutting some timber may be o.k., but no clearing or removing stumps by a Dozier is allowed. Only what can be done by hand. This property may not be classified as a wetland,if this is so, they can do what they want with it.

We had a small slough off a creek we use to woodie hunt every year. The farmer decided to drain it and till everything under...he almost served some time over it. Legaly, if you destroy a wetland(didn't know about the classification deal) you have to get it OKed, and build one to take its place somewhere else.
