I have been hunting for several years now but up to this point it has all been modern firearm/muzzleloader. I have always wanted to get into archery and try my hand at bow hunting but I really dont know where to begin. Like everything else, there are too many choices when it comes to gear / setup etc. MBeeler suggested I try out Field and Stream Outfitters here in Louisville and I think I am going to do that after this weekends hunt (thanks for the info M). There is also a place on Dixie Hwy. called Rut and Strut. I was just wondering if anyone had some additional pointers for an amature. Field and Stream has an indoor range which would be nice because obviously I will need alot of practice. I am no stranger to the outdoors and I fully realize that with all hunting/fishing/camping equipment you get what you pay for so I dont want to skimp on the bow, etc.

Thanks...

I'm not familiar with either location, but the indoor range would certainly give you an added benefit, of not only practice after the purchase, but assist in the selection process. Good luck!

line and sinker..... :) I have never used a compound bow so I know I have a long way to go before I can justify hunting with one but I look forward to the practice and preparation of getting myself ready for the first hunt...

Pooge, You go to Field & Stream and Scott will have you shooting tight groups before you leave....You just have to listen to him and do what he says and he'll work w/ you...If you buy a bow from him you get free range time w/ it and he'll set it up great...The biggest must of archery is having gear that fits you...You must do everything the same each time..a bow that doesn't fit you will not allow you to do this...Scott is a good guy and knows his trade....Since I help him in the shop some, I may be a little biased..[:D]

You will not be sorry about your decision to take up bowhunting. You may want to find a good used bow to start out with. The owner usually has all the equipment for sale with it, and you can talk to he or she to help you along. Also, consider using carbon arrows right off the bat, I started using them about 3 years ago...and I will never go back. Bowhunting allows you to get in the woods earlier in the season, and you get to stay later too. I do very little hunting with a gun anymore, because I enjoy bowhunting so much. It makes you have to get closer to deer, which makes you a better hunter head-and-shoulders over all of the rest of these goofs that only gun hunt. You will not be sorry, I have taken many more deer with my bow than with my gun, so you can see how much I love it.

WoW, The first time you see that fletching dissappear behind
the shoulder of a Whitetail, You will be forever changed!

So far all th advice given here has been excellent. I advise that you do got to a reputable dealer, hang out and "pick" brains (You know what I mean) For sure it's important to have a bow that fits you, from draw weight, to draw length, mass weight of the bow etc......

Good luck in your quest and I wish you Good fortune and Happy Hunting!

Again, thanks to all. I spoke with Scott King at Field and Stream and he is going to set me up right. Purchase of the bow comes with custom fitting, training and 5 hours of time at their indoor range. Looking forward to it :)

Hey MQ1 I was wondering what scott thought about the new hoyts and the cam and a half system compared to mathews being he carries both? I shoot a Q2 but was thinking of buying a SQ2 but I will hold off till I see what mathews comes out with to bad they never bring nothing out till after the A.M.O. show. Anyone heard any rumors?

I myself am now shooting a Hoyt. I swapped at the beginning of the season and love it. I shot the 03' models about 2 weeks ago and the ARE SWEET....I'm shooting a Cybertech now and as much as I liked the 03' models it's not worth the extra funds. Great bows, fast, quiet, but not as smooth on the draw as the 02' Cybertech...
You aughta check em' out..
