I am new to KY and living in Louisville. I am looking for some advise on some public land to hunt.I have got a couple days this weekend and the beginning of next week. I was debating between hunting in Western KY at Higginson-Henry and/or Sloughs, Eastern Ky at Paintsville, hitting the local convenient Lake Taylorsville. Any advice or other suggestions?

I plan on trying T-ville because it is so close, particularly if I only have a half day to hunt. But I have a couple of days to kill and have read a little about the trophy opportunities in the western KY (& eastern)areas. I am a grad student on a budget so I was going to try and head out there and primative camp.

And what is the status of the rut in different areas right now? Thanks.

JL,

The rut is in full swing here in Western KY. Last Thursday, on my way to work, I saw 3 diferent bucks, all shooters, chasing does.

As far as good places to hunt around L'ville, you might ask Holedigger or CPA Hunter, both of whom live there. I used to live there & got my hunting info from guys who hung out at a little convenience store (used to be a gas station) located just south of the crossroads in J-Town. The head guru is named Tarsal Thornsberry.

Good luck!

You better check with the Dept before you do any of that at TVILLE.

JL,

To find the little store, go south on Taylorsville Rd thru "downtown" J-town. Just after you cross over Waterson Trail, the little convenience store is on your right ( the west side of the road). They used to have a walk-in freezer where you could store your deer & the regulars frequently kept a big crock-pot full of deer chili for you to partake of. Pretty good with a cold brew, if I remember correctly!
