Just got back from the trappers' college in Indiana. Got to spend the week with some of the most famous trappers in America.

Most all the pro's select food based or curiousity lures in the early season, gland lures later in the season and some type of really "loud" lure (ie..skunk based) during the really cold weather. Others will use mostly urine to catch K-9's.

Keep track of the lure used during the season and remember to change up your lures when you have several traps on the same farm. The animal doesn't know what happened when he snaps a trap and doesn't get caught, but he remembers the smell.

I'm no trapper, but if you catch him, what does it matter if he remembers the smell?

I think he meant "when he snaps a trap and doesn't get caught."

I had a hound once that got lost while close to my house one night. A few days later the dog showed up at the house with one of his rear legs bloody with the meat cut to the bone. I guess it could have been something else, but it looked suspiciously like a trap injury to me. I guess what I'm asking is: if your looking to attract K-9s, aren't you risking trapping somebody's dog?

Now, I'm all for trapping, don't get me wrong. I firmly believe that Delta Waterfowl's policy of promoting predator management as a solution to dwindling waterfowl numbers, as opposed to DU's policy of appeasing the anti-hunting liberals, is right on target. Just always used to scare me when I coon hunted and I would steer clear of hunting where I knew somebody had a trap line. Was I worried for nothing or was I right to worry?

Well drakeshooter someone could have trash traped your dog. By that i mean some that call themselfs trappers that hang a whole chicken in a tree and set half a dozen traps under it. I have seen this done. That is by no means a trapper. In over 30 years i,ve caught 0 dogs or cats. Domestic kind that is, because of this type of trapping almost all the coonhunters in my area dislike trappers. Maybe fox hounds are another matter, but a sent post or dirthole set will catch its target, most of the time, sometimes things happen but if you know an area has a line on it you were smart to avoid it. The lines i run have coon hunters around it all season. I try very hard to avoid the places where this could happen to someones dog, i by pass good areas because of this. I fully support the hunting sports of any kind. We as a body of sportsman need to lookout for everyones right to enjoy the sport they choose. If we donot stand together the outcome could be grim for all our futures. For what its worth i will say thankyou for still supporting trapping. Even though this could have taken you in another direction.
