They grow antlers because of too much testosterone which is a male hormone. It happens in all species of animals with different results. A human female with too much testosterone usually has facial hair. Anything from the faint moustache to the bearded lady in the old side shows just depending on how much test. there is. That's why the laws in this state are worded like they are. Notice your deer tags specify antlered or antlerless, not buck or doe.

Nice deer, I would have taken it in a heartbeat, doe or not!!

Looks to have double brow tines as well, maybe?

Yep, just like bearded hens, just freaks of nature. And I too would have had no problem arrowing her...nice rack for a buck, much less a doe!

Nice shebuck! Basswipe, in the past tags said antlered/antlerless in order to avoid confusion in this situation as well as in a situation with button bucks,I agree. This year, tags have been changed to say male/female. In my opinion this was not a very well thought out change. If you were to put female in this circumstance, some might be apt to try to pull a fast one and take another antered deer. Also, if one was to shoot a button, and the next week take a buck, If checked by the C/O, you would have a document saying you had taken two males. Easily interpreted as two bucks. Any insight on why this change was made or if my thinking is totally off balance?

I have no idea why the thought process on that one changed. My suspicions would be that a bunch of politicians that know nothing about the sport had something to do with it. I agree with you that it should never have been changed. The rules and definitions were so simple and precise that anyone could understand and follow them. It was either antlered or antlerless with a very clear definition of what antlered was. You know politicos, they can't stand for something to be simple and effective. They have to muddy up the issue somehow or another. I think your thinking is right on. Obviously you have not future in politics!! LOL[:D]

I wonder how that affects another buck when it gets the scent to mate it. Also, would male offspring from a doe like this be genetically in line for a huge rack??? Just curious.

Interesting question pooge: My initial thought would be that if she were to mate with a big racked buck that they would put out some seriously racked deer.

I don't think the antlers would affect the mating at all as long as she had a normal estrous cycle. Mating in deer is driven by scent and behaviour, not by appearance.

I agree about the appearance not being an issue but what I meant was if the buck would be confused thinking it was another buck and initially try to run it off before it realized what was going on...

I don't have a clue on that one. Can you imagine if deer could talk? A big buck sees this doe from a distance, he goes running over there saying "Hey buddy, you're on my turf and I'm gonna kick yer A__! Whoa, wait a minute, you're a girl. You wanna go over behind these bushes?" LOL
