I personall like Winchester Extended Range #5 shot, it is pretty pricey though. I only use mine during the spring, in the fall I shoot Winchester Supreme #5 shot.

Theres many opinions on that. I personally shoot winn HV 31/2 #4's in my 870 with a .665 jelly head. Going to prob shoot heavy shot this spring. People swear by all sorts of loads, but it depends on what lenght shell, choke constriction etc... Lead is cheaper but wont pattern as well. You just have to put pellets on paper to see what works for you...

I like hevi-13, or winchester extended range in #6's. 3" or 3.5". With a .660-.670 turkey choke. Just get a box of whatever you want to try and some chokes from friends and do some pattern testing.

or

just go to nitro shell company's web site and buy what the recommend and pattern that to make sure and go hunting. I've never heard of anyone who bought their suggested combo that wasn't impressed. But get your wallet ready, they are HHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

Anything Winchester is my choice for the $.....but, if $ is not a issue, NITRO$ are the best! I use them in the Spring for the big boys for a little extra insurance in case they hang up, and I use anything Winchester in the Fall (I usually get closer shots then).

All joking aside, Nitro's are the best. Nothing can touch them.

Ech Hunter - what determines "the best" turkey shell to you? Is it price, performance, availability, payload? True... it is hard to beat the pattern density of Nitro Ammo. But be prepared to pay $7+ a shell. And, buy them BEFORE turkey season. Nitro Ray gets pounded by orders quick when Spring starts to get close. They are tough to beat - realize they are handloaded custom ammo. I have used Nitros before and they did as expected. I took a turkey at 55 steps and smoked him. After I used all my Nitros, I decided to stay on the HeviShot wagon but get something priced a fuzz less. So, I decided to go with Hevi13 and Winchester Xtended Range. Both are great shells. This is not to say a good copper-plated lead won't do the trick either. Half of the puzzle is matching "the best ammo" with a quality choke.

Depends on how you hunt in my opinion. If you routinely shoot birds at 40+ yards, you might be better off with some of the high end turkey loads. I have never bothered to go that route personally. Part of the reason is I just refuse to spend that kind of money on a shotgun shell. I have never hit a bird and not killed it with lead. I also don't shoot until they get into 35 yards or less.

Grant does make a good point. If you don't shoot turkeys past 40 yards then good ole copper-plated lead does the trick. You just have to know the limits of your choke/load combo. Personally, I have had hunts where I knew the choke/load combo I was using wouldn't throw an even, dense pattern at 40+ yards. This cost me a few gobblers that I had to let walk.

i like the hevi shot 13 with #5 shot but i would recommend getting a buddy buying 2-3 maybe four boxes of different ammos and splitting the cost then going and shooting to see patterns

I kill turkeys with 1 oz of 6's through a modified choke Remington Model 58 in 16ga. He was dead as a hammer at 39 yards.

Don't buy into some kind of turkey shell hype. You can't kill them deader than dead.

It finally donned on me why this question keeps coming up year after year.

Shell manufacturers and choke tube makers are always coming out with the latest and greatest.......

Funny how Nitro Ammuntion doesnt do that..... I guess when you are the best there is no reason to play catch up.........
