Hey all,

My wife decided for the first time ever to try hunting. She only wants to turkey hunt though. Which is fine with me, I'm super excited. However, with it being Fall season now, I want to be able to bring in a turkey for her. Does anybody have any tips/advice/pointers to give so that she can shoot a turkey her first time out? I know that once she gets one, she'll be hooked like me! Thanks if advance for your help!!!

Welcome to the sport of Fall Turkey Hunting. I have been hunting in the fall since we finally started the season in my area many years ago. I really love the challange of fall birds and while it may still be a turkey, it is like hunting a different animal.

In the spring you are using the Tom's seach for a hen to bring him within gun range. In the fall they are not really interested in the opposite sex and are just flocking up with each other. Fall turkeys are easier to pattern so if you like to do the ambush method it is possible in the fall. A more exciting way is to get close to the flock, then bust them up and call them back using the Kee Kee Run Call. If you don't know this call, you will hear them doing the call the moment they settle back down and try to find each other. I use a mouth call, but I have used a slate call with some success. Since they are not as lonely big toms usually bust totally out of the area so it is tough to kill big gobblers using this method, but you can call hens and young jakes fairly easily using the bust up method.

While there are execptions, you will not hear the big booming gobble of the Spring birds, but hunting in the fall with the leaves changing and the Indian Summers that can be experienced around the fall gun season can be very rewarding.

Good Luck.

If you can bust up the flock it can be quite easy,if not they will often respond to lots of yelping ,and cutting has always seemed to fire up the adult hens in my experience.Kee kee's work great on young jakes if you are able to do them.

Roost a flock the night before and set up on them the next morning. Not on top of them, but within earshot. I have called several fall birds in after fly down when they are trying to group up...

All these are great advice, the only thing i would add is to make sure and do a little scouting these next couple of weeks before season comes in. You wont always find them in the same place in the fall as you did in the spring. Just be carful not to bump birds.
The scatter and call back has worked well for me on the hens & young ones, but when I want to kill a long beard i scout them out by knowing there travel routs and setting up and doing a "little" calling and a lot of waiting in ambush mode....i personaly believe this is what it takes to kill the BIG boys in the Fall.:D

In the rain is a good time to hunt fall turkeys too. They'll be out in the fields more. Not a pouring down rain, but a nice drizzle, or right after a rain...

Call Often and alot until one answers you. Then wait and copy exactly what the Turkey does and says until they get closer. Then stop and wait. I use this tactic in the fall and has always awarded me with a Turkey.
If this does not work scout till you find a flock then scatter them, wait for 30 minutes before calling.
Good luck and have fun.
