I'm toying with the notion of buying a new-to-me truck and I want "real world" input on fuel milage. My choices are F-150 ext cab or four door and the Chevy or GMC Z71 ext cab or four door, shortbed 4X4, '02 to '05. So far Ive heard 20 mpg on the chevy and getting mixed on the F150 of 12 to 20mpg.
Now before any of you start, this is not a Ford vs.Chevy or Philpotts new truck thread:D

Your 12 mpg fuel mileage on the Ford is a combined mileage estimate of both city and highway. A 2002 F-150 is rated at 11 city and 15 highway for a average of 12 mpg. A 2003 F-150 is one better at 13 mpg combined as it a 2004 year model. A 2005 4WD F-150 is rated for 14 mpg, which is 12 city and 16 highway.
On the Chevrolet side I believe you will get maybe 1 or 2 even possibly 3 more mpg on each gallon of gas. A 2002 Z-71 should do 14 city and 18 highway with the 03, 04 and 05 right in the same ballpark. A 2005 Silverado will do between 13-17 mpg. I assume that is 13 city and 17 highway.
Hope this helps you. Most of the information I have provided came from www.edmunds.com (http://www.edmunds.com) You can get on there and gain alot of information about just about any vehicle.
Also remember the estimated miles per gallon on vehicles are based a certain type of driving style. My Jeep Rubicon is supposed to get 19 mpg as stated from the factory, but I can safely say it doesn't do near that. If it gets 16 mpg I would be surprised.

I have an 05 F150 4x4 with the 5.4L and I get between 13-14 in the city.

My 05 F150 with a 5.4L gets around 17mpg combined. I don't do a lot of city driving but I don't do a lot of highway driving either. Most of my mileage is secondary or back roads with stops every 5 miles or so and quite a bit of rural traffic.

Recently traded an '02 Z-71 GMC, never really checked every day mileage but consistantly got 20+ on the highway. One trip from Louisville to Tampa and back, stayed around 70mph the whole time and logged 22mpg average. It had the 5.3 engine.

My 04 GMC with the 5.3 gets 20+ on the highway. Around town it gets 15 or 16. It has 373 gears and is a 4x4 Xtra cab. All stock. I set the cruise at 70 on hiway and I don't hotrod around town.

I've had my old truck since it was new ('99). It's a Z-71 with a 5.7, and I still get 16 everyday driving and 18 on the road..........
