New Elk Releases??

Have there been any elk releases yet this season? Any scheduled?
Where from? How many? Release site location?

Elk are being captured now in Utah. The first shipment from Utah should be next week. We are hoping to get at least 200 elk from Utah this winter, 50 from Arizona in February, and another 200+ from New Mexico during Feb/March.

These elk will go on an existing release site (Blue Diamond) and on public lands in the elk restoration zone. If the goal of 450 or so elk is met this year (our record is 409 year before last) we will need only about 300 to finish the project next winter--3 years ahead of schedule.

THREE questions 1) Are the releases still publisized and open to the public?

2) Will another patch be offered for this year's permit application?

3) Can a person look for and keep sheds for elk near the release sites where elk are currently living?

Only two public releases have been made in 4 years. None are planned this winter--logistics are difficult for the elk.

Yes a new 2002 patch has been designed and if you send a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Dept. with proof of your application (photo copy or permit number) you will be sent a nice patch.

Yes you can look for and keep elk sheds. Several people do this.
