My wifes uncle sold me a mosin-nagant that he traded for at the flea market. Only gave $50 for it and a box of Wolf ammo. Its a 1917 model with the angled reciever. Clean bore and sharp rifiling. Everythings there except the cleaning rod which I should be able to find online somewhere. 90+ years of gunk takes a bunch of CLP to get rid of.
Anyone else own one?

I have shot a few and with fresh ammo they seem to be shooters if they are tight and in good shape bore wise.

Mines a M44 Carbine. Shoots great, surplus ammo groups about 4", good winchester ammo groups around 2" and my reloads are down to 1.25" (all groups are with the bayonet extended, It won't group for crap with it folded in). Of course with the 91/30 you won't have to worry about the bayonet part.

Only compliant......worst trigger I've ever felt. My son's BB gun has a better trigger than my M-N.

I gave $125 for mine with a 440 round sealed tin of ammo.

If you are shooting old surplus ammo, it is corrosive, just run a patch soaked in windex a few times down the bore then clean as normal.

One more thing, don't worry if its hard to extract the spent rounds, it's a common thing with the M-N's. Some are hard, some not. Only worry if it is hard to chamber a fresh round.

Thanks, I'm having a hard time nailing down where exactly it was made. Where it is an older model with the hex reciever and barrel bands (1917). The trigger pull is very smooth but also very heavy. The thing weighs a ton. I got a few online manuals and took everything including the bolt apart last night and scrubbed good with a brass brush and a can of CLP. I found a deal on ebay for a sling, 3 stripper clips and a cleaning rod all together so it should come together soon. Will try to shoot it tomorrow. I can see how this mil-surp thing is addictive. Felt odd taking apart a 90+ year old rifle that had made it through the Russian revolution and two world wars intact. Going to keep my eye open now for a K31, Mauser or an Enfield.

Many of the GOOD ones went to tullia (sp) arsenal for a refinish or were built there. the 91/30s were hand picked for sniper rifles. I have and m-48A yugo mauser that was refinished and never fired, it shoots great. The K98s are getting harder to come buy with waffenamps and command a higher price. They are prized by rebuilders for thier actions and usually get rebarreled into a US friendly caliber. I want to build a 375 H&H off of one. tons of german rifles were sold off after the war and pre war to other countries.

So what is yalls ammo of choice? I really don't want to shoot the corrosive stuff after seeing the gunk come out of the gun last night. Winchester any good? The 200g silver bear soft point looks like it would do ok for deer if I ever got a wild hair to use it for hunting. It came with a box of the 200g wolf.

Anything that is berden primed is usually non corrosive. you use to be able to buy some good surplus in high volume but i think its about all gone. brown bear or wolf or silver bear or S&B

As far as I know, winchester only offers the 7.62x54r in 180gr FMJ but they shoot good and it's good reloadable brass.

Newer Wolf and Silver Bear are steel cased, and berdan primed but not corrosive. I think the S&B is brass cased and boxer primed but I could be wrong.

Good info here:

There is some chance it might be older than 1917 if for some reason the original manufacturing details got scrubbed or the receiver just wasn't built on at the time. Usually the original manufacturer and date can be found under the rear receiver tang as shown here:

I've been doing a ton of reading recently and plan on putting up some pics and details. It is a 1917 Izhevsk arsenal M91. Most Mosins you see at gunshops are 91/30's or M44's. The tang date matches the reciever. I also learned cosmoline is a *&%$# to remove. The imperial crest was scrubbed on the barrel however they missed the one on the reciever. Learned that the sights are marked in arshins which is a soviet measure equal to a soliders pace. I'm a history buff and learning about this 93 year old rifle has been a blast.

Sounds like a neat old rifle. Those 91's are long as a flag pole but are lot of fun. Beware of the Finn Mosins, they are addictive.

Nice! Bet you could get $150-$200 out of her if you wanted to sell. How about a pic of the receiver? That is where the history is at.

For future reference Dollar general oven cleaner will get rid of cosmoline, Just keep it away from wood parts. It will also remove 60 yr old engine gunk and paint from old tractors.
