At what distance you practice would depend a lot upon your shooting goals. True “Bullseye” matches have a maximum distance of 50 yards. USPS/ISPC and IDPA games are generally 5 to 20 yards (with the rare “standards” exercise that may stretch out to 50 yards.

If you are just plinking and practicing to hit what you are shooting at then do what you feel like. Any decent 1911 style 45 should able to hit a coke can size target at 20-25 yards.

Practical “maximum” range is around 50 yards...but with a bit of practice you can have some fun learning to lob in your shots out to 100 yards on to a target the size of gallon paint can.

Average distance in a gunfight.....7 feet. Practice at different distances. You don't need a full sight picture at 10 feet like you do at 20 yards.

Most of my practice starts at 10 feet and work my way back in 5 to 10 foot intervals out to 25 yards.

I shoot mainly double taps, but I sometimes shot entire mags working on shoot and move, and shooting while moving.

Only thing that stays still when a gun is fired is a paper target, everything else heads for the hills (or what ever cover is available lol). If you don't learn to shoot and move, you are making yourself a still target.

Ive got a Norinco 1911 45 which I love. Bought it new back in 92 for $239. One of the best investments ive ever got!! Now with military 230 fmj ball it doesnt group good. But with my lead cast reloads it shoots fantastic! It will do better than a 5 gallon bucket at 100 yds. It likes 253 grain cast bullets for the 45 long Colt. They go out like little bowling balls!! I use heavier springs for the heavy bullets.
