The LKS is a Green Leaf Member of the American Chestnut Foundation.
Here is an update on the work beening done to bring the Chestnut Trees back.

Pollination time is here and staff and volunteers are both scouring the hills for surviving flowering American chestnut trees and busy lining up climbers and bucket trucks. It is a short "window" of about two weeks here in the northern states and the southern states are about a week early this year. Rex Mann and Ray Hornback continue to provide great efforts in Kentucky with growing success!

If your interested in this project contact: Southern Appalachian Regional Office, One Oak Plaza, Suite 308 Asheville, NC 28801, tel: (828)281-0047, fax; (828)253-5373, E-mail; asheville@acf.org

If your not aware of the group, their doing everything they can to restore the American Chestnut.

Adam,
Everthing went for the American Chestnut. It was a consistent and heavy mast crop for wildlife and free roaming livestock. It was a cash crop for mountain people. The nuts were collected and sold by the train load to eastern cities. The wood was rot resistant and you can still find stumps and some barns and outbuildings still standing that are of Chestnut. The trees were huge, the wood easy to work with and the wormy chestnut made furniture that is still widely sought after. The demise of the American Chestnut was the demise of wildlife and a way of life as our ancestors knew it. Nothing could be more important to hunters and wildlife as well as citizens and the lumber industry as a complete and healthy return of the American Chestnut.

If you are a member, you get first crack at the new trees when they are successful.

While I was pres, the state chapter of the NWTF heavily backed, financially and otherwise, the American Chestnut project. George Wright was behind it solidly while with the KDFWR, and brought us on board. I won't see them back, but it only matters that my descendants will.

I heard of a farm in Pulaski county where some regular American Chestnut trees survived the blight and still produce nuts, last I heard the state or local chapter of the Chestnut foundation was looking into or working on seedlings from that source.I've never got around to it but have wanted to join just to get the free seedlings or seed nuts they give for signing up.
Anybody know where to get any Chinquapins at?
