What are everyones goals for this year season? This is my first year trapping, so mine are pretty small, but I am hoping for a lot more...
Racoon- at least 100
Muscrat- at least 50
Coyote- would love to catch 1, but I hear they are pretty hard
Fox- same as coyote
skunks- not targetting them, but will take as many as i can get
opposums- a big FAT 0, not that that will ever happen
I am going to do more canine trapping this year just because I had an older trapper in my area tell me that "there was no way a first year trapper would do any good with the fox's or yotes", so I have to prove him wrong.

Hey Phil!
Those were some pretty lofty goals. How have you done so far?[:)]

i've heard of people trapping but what is the purpose of it. do you eaty all the animals or is it for the fur?

First and foremost, we trap for the love of the outdoors and to emulate our trapping heritage. Beyond that, the reasons can range from personal to spiritual. Personally I practice using all of the animal I can, and let little go to waste. The fur, of course, is the main objective and the other uses are viewed as secondary. My family prepares the meat of everything from racoons, muskrats, to foxes for our meals, and I sell the skulls as an additional revenue from the animal. Trapping ultimately gets us in touch with our roots, and as an avid hunter and fisherman I can truly say that trapping brings me something deeper.

'yotes were a HUGE payoff- the dogs were bringing $25 to $30 and reds were a little less. Seen lots of $3-$4 muskrats and the bottom fell out of coons- I sold several nice ones for just a couple of dollars. As always though, I had tons of fun and count the season a huge success.

Just as a reminder, it's illegal to keep your fur longer than 30-days after the close of trapping season. [;)]
I haven't trapped since the winter of '78/'79. Gray Fox at that time was selling easily for $40 each and the Reds were in the $60 range. Racoon @ $15 to $20 if mature.
I have a lot of #2 double spring traps. I'm so out of the loop now I don't even know if my #2's are the preferred method any more or not.
Are there other traps/methods that work better?...........after 20+ years I still find myself looking for trapping sign when deer hunting. Can't get it out of me......I haven't forgot how to get 'em!

<br />That only applies to "raw" furs, doesn't it? I certainly don't want to do anything illegal.I think it's legal to keep the furs if you tan the animal or send it to a licensed taxidermist.I better get that cleared up.

Here's the KRS law on that -
150.180 Buying, selling, or transporting protected wildlife, mussels and fishes, raw
fur, or processed wildlife.
(3) Raw furs, if in legal possession, may be sold, transported, or shipped, by a licensed
trapper or licensed hunter to a licensed fur buyer (resident or nonresident), and by a
licensed fur buyer to a licensed fur processor or to another fur buyer if in legal possession.
Raw furs may be held in possession by a trapper or hunter twenty (20) days and a fur
buyer for thirty (30) days following the close of the season. A fur processor may hold raw
furs or sell to another licensed fur processor at any time.
........so once they're no longer "raw" meaning tanned or mounted, they're ok. Hope this helps, Jeff

thanks Adam,
I do more spinning reel fishing than I do flyfishing, but I like the little guy since he is wading, which is my favorite kind of fishing!
