Mossberg GST 500 12g 20" PTT HRDWDSGRN

I want one twelve gauge for home defense, turkey, birds, short distance deer, squirrels, trap, range, etc. Thinking about this one. Not expecting it to be 100% perfect in any subject but it seems good all-around. Thoughts?

Was never a fan of the Mossy, but with the proper assortment of chokes, it will certainly do all the things you will ask it to do.

Why do some people not like them and say they're inferior to the 870? I like the fit, and it was the only pump shotgun to pass the military abuse tests. 870's couldn't cut it.

To each their own. It's a darn fine weapon, and will last much much longer than you will.

I searched my post over and over, and darn it, I just can't find where I panned the Remington, or even mentioned it.

I don't like the top mounted safety. That's all.

I'm not saying you did, lots of other people do though. They usually say the Rems will last longer.

I have an 835 turkey gun. It will get the job done and is reliable and will last a lifetime. If you don't mind buying a used gun the pawn shops are full of mossbergs right now and you could save a hundred bucks or so.

I have to agree with trust me though. It just seems kind of clunky and rattley and I doubt that I would buy another one. The only time mine sees daylight is during turkey season. If you want something that you can throw behind the seat of the truck and not worry about getting it knocked around a little it would be a good choice. If you want something that swings well on birds or clays you might want to look at something different.

CD,
I bought a Mossberg Tactical Turkey in 12ga. just this year. Mine has the adjustible pistol grip stock and love it. There are lots of M-berg haters out there
But they are just jealous that their 870 didn't pass the military test. With mine, it makes an ideal home defense gun and if drawn for Knox, will get a slug barrel for it.

I have never shot the GST 500.Looks like a great gun.I also have an 835 and an 870.Mossberg makes a great gun.Mine has a turkey barrel and slug barrel.Great for turkey and deer but when it comes to trap or range i use the 870.Its a lot lighter than the 835 and can swing it better. If i had to choose 1 of the 2 to be an overall gun i would choose the 870.I would go to a gun shop that has the guns you are choosing from and i would physically look at them.Everybody is gonna have a different outlook on what is their fav.

I had a 500 and it did not fit me at all (same with a BPS), it may work fine for you but I would recommend trying whatever you are interested in first. Shotgun fit is very important to how well you will shoot it. I did pretty much what you are after by buying a Wingmaster and 3 barrels.

I can't find that 20" 500 locally, I'd have to order it. After transfer fees it would be $350. Gander Mountain has an 835 in the same length and finish, but it's an overbored barrel so I couldn't shoot slugs, and it's $80 more. Recoil should be less though. I don't know which one to get. I do really like that 20" 835, it's just a matter of $80 and the ability to shoot slugs without swapping barrels. I doubt I'll ever try to shoot a 3.5" super magnum shell.

I dont care if it passed the military test or not.Im not gonna pack a heavey azz gun around that rattles an makes noise setting in the corner an kicks your teeth out every time you shoot it.my ol 870 has had many rounds through it an will have many more.yea yalls moss.mite not shoot a barrel out but the 870 wouldnt eather if it have a 10ga barrel punche out for 12ga that what they look like

I owned a 500 for years ,it was dependable never let me down, but when you took the trigger out stuff fell out and was a chore to put back together. It rattled and was made out of cheap wood looked like it should of said made in china.I know of several people that have 835s great turkey gun maybe the best for the money ,but to noisey for me ,as for the goverment useing them ,there like a AK47 will shoot dirty there tolerances are so sloppy the will fire no matter what. to compare a mossburg to a remington is silly rem cheapened up its 870 to make it more compatable in the market, rough finish cheaper wood ,but it still doesnt look like it was made in china. The moss is defanitly an great gun , but it aint no rem.

I've looked at several and it's kind of interesting how different the forearm rattles are among different models. Both Rem and Mossy makes different forearms, some are loose, some aren't bad. The tactical style Remington and the Mossbergs with the standard barrel are both loose. If you get the Remington that is wood or shaped like the wood ones, or if you get the Mossberg that has the overbored 10 gauge size barrel, they aren't nearly as sloppy and noisy. I've about decided I definitely don't like the standard Mossberg 500 forearm, but the 835 Grand Slam with the 10 gauge size barrel feels nice.

Mossberg is a fine weapon, really accurate with slugs too. I just dont like the fact that they rattle like a bag wrenches. As far as the MIL. tests go, thats just another test, possibly just to get/keep the Mossberg contract?.you'll have to make up your own mind on which suites you better, they're both proven shotguns so its more or less preference
