Clean nipples!!!

The number one reason that a M.L. might not go off will be a dirty nipple. I always burn some powder, then shoot once of twice to clear the grease out of the bore, then change to a clean nipple. Load her up and it will be ready when you need it. I don't fire it till I'm done. That way, your nipple is clear and it will go off.

My muzzleloader goes off at the sight of a nice clean shinny nipple. Of course I keep it primed and ready at all times.

multi.....where do you burn the powder and how??????????... i also don't fire till i'm ready...............it is also good to push a pipe cleaner through the nipple so you don't have to remove it and shoot a few caps through to clean the rest of the small particles away....you have always done very well in your explainations' but this one has really thrown me.........i believe in a clean nipple (s ) but i'm going to have to a go a little farther then the lone ranger and ask if the swelling in the neck has restricked a little flow of blood to the head ............ez

I don't want any part of nipples with a hole large enough to push a pipe cleaner through.........they's got iddy biddy holes to keep all that 25,000 lbs of psi outta your face. I clean mine with a tooth brush & hot soapy water, then blow them out with an air hose.

First of all, you don't want to use any oil. Use the Natural Lube being sold in several varities by everyone that makes M.L. products. This is generally a yellow waxy like grease. Your M.L. will be clean and throughly coated with this stuff. I'll then put on a cap and pop it or two. Then drop in a load of powder and recap it. Stick it out the window or somewhere safe and touch her off. Do this twice.

You've now heated up the grease and you know that the nipple is clear and will go off when needed. Because the nipple has such a small hole, it will close up very easily. Change it out with a clean one and then you ready. You can leave you M.L. ready to fire for the lenght of the season if you want.

If you shoot, repeat the part about changing the nipple. With the natural lube, the bore will be OK till it's time to put it up for the year. I've not seen a nipple you can get a pipe cleaner through. Carry a pick, but they are a lot smaller.

With all that stuff you do to get ready it must take you for ever to get the second shot off. You guys should look in to a double barrell.

And having one load in your gun the whole season and never letting it go! Not Me! I shoot my gun off every time I get a chance. Practice makes perfect.

Swab the barrell, Pick the nipple, load her up and shoot! repeat as necessary!

I like to use old pieces of guitar strings to clean my nipples out. Just cut them a couple inches above the end with the round piece, and they will work fine.
