What is your budget? I personally won't go with anything less than a Weaver or Bushy Legend.

The Weaver classic series & Nikon Prostaff both can be had for around 150$ and are great scopes for that price. A 3x-9x is really all you need but I personally like the 4x-16x on my favorite yote rifle.

I put a Trijicon Accupoint 3X9X40 with crosshairs and an amber dot. Zeroed to 200 yds. Put the dot on the dog and squeeze = dead dog. Very bright optics. Works great low light

I like Burris Fullfield II, clear glass and tough. I have 3 one on a AR 223, one on a 243 bolt action and one on a 300 WM Encore. Never had a problem from any and you can usaully get them for under $200 on ebay.

I have a Sightron S2 416X42MD on my CZ 452 Varmint. It's a 4X16X42 with mil dot reticle. It is very clear and has a lifetime replacement warranty. The warranty is transferable.

Here's the specs. on one. I bought mine from Whittaker guns.

Those Rossi single shots are handy little compact things, and a regular sized scope (42 or larger bell diameter) with varmint magnification is gonna look like a brick sitting on it. And will ruin the handiness and compactness.

Never had one, but Burris is importing a smaller, lighter line of scopes called "Timberline" that are probably plenty good enough for a 223's recoil. They make a 4.5-14 model with a 32 bell diameter.

For my two cents, unless the quality stunk (Burris probably wouldn't put their name on junk), a burris Timberline would be about the perfect varmint scope for a single shot Rossi or NEF. they even make a fine-haired ballistic plex model.
