My H&R Ultra Slug hunter loves the Hornady SST 2 3/4"

I'm guessing you're talking about sabots. The five that I've had experience with are the old federal lead sabots. They shot the best in my 870 but I can't find them anymore. Everybody stocks the new Barnes bullets sabots they cost a lot more. Remington copper solids, they key holed at 50yds.in my wifes 20 gauge. Remington Buckhammers, they kicked so bad in her little 20 that I only shot one. I'm now shooting the Lightfields in my 12 they shoot good, not as good as the old Federals but they knock deer DRT. My wife shoots Winchester BRI standard velocity sabots in her 20, they're a little short on knock down power but shoot nearly in the same hole at 50yds. and hardly any recoil. Hope this helps, Tom PS I forgot one, the above mentioned Hornady SSTs they shot good in my son's 20ga. H&R not so good in my 12ga. 870.

Slugs like anything else are trail and error, youll just have to get a few and try them out.

It would help to know what you are shooting. gauge? Barrel, fully rifled, smoothbore, or rifled choke?
When I lived in Indiana we always liked the Remington Copper Solids in a fully rifled barrel. A saboted slug would probably not be your best choice if you are not shooting a fully rifled barrel. Shotgun world has a website with a forum devoted to slug shooting.

Try Remington "Buckhammers". They shoot very well in my 20 gauge Browning Gold with a rifled barrel.

This. There just is no way around it - whatever works for some else really doesn't tell you much.

With a fully rifled barrel I would start with a saboted slug of some type. It will probably shoot most any premium type ok and may prefer one brand more than another. I never saw a marked improvement with anything other than 2 3/4" shells and they pound you hard enough. I never enjoyed shooting a slug gun. If you are hunting in cover they do tend to take a deer down where he stands at those close ranges.
