If you are going to spend time in Gatlinburg as well as in the park, I would stay at one of the hotels on Ski Mountain Rd. It is the last road before you enter the park. You are on the edge of town and also have easy access to the Park.

Its a little on the expenxive side compared to some of the other hotels in the area, but you cant go wrong with The Inn at Christmas Place in Pigeon Forge. Me and my wife stayed there last year on our honeymoon and its was first class. I know the theme motif might throw alot off, but you couldnt ask for a better staff, rooms and accomodations.

Several times I have been down there I always get a time share for free, all you have to do is listen to their talk for 2 hours and then tell them no, they have always given me three days free.
In addition I have always gotten free tickets to most of the events doing the same thing.
However if you can't say no, then I wouldn't recommend it to you.

where ever you stay ask if you can look at the room first.

Try Glenstone Lodge. THey have excellent facilities, no free breakfast even though it is served in their restaraunt. Just down the street is a Log Cabin Pancake House which has excellent food. It's also located in the upper end of town on Roaring Fork Road so you can use the bypass to get to the upper end and not have to drive through town. I have stayed there several times under 100 bucks. Call or walk in and finaggle a low rate. Tell em that you're a government worker or know a government worker for a laugh and ten percent off additional. If I go someplace and just take the first rate they offer, I'll pay much more than if I ask a couple of times (politely) for the lowest available rate. ALso, look for online specials, they are much lower lots of times. Have a great time!

Yeah, I agree. I made the mistake of answering the first "sharp" sale guy who asked "Does this sound like something you two would be interested in?" with a maybe. Then comes a hard sell and then a soft sell after I got wise and said no. Mine took four hours instead of the basic two. My fault though. Got 100 bucks, no room.
