my great grandfather had a 12 ga. nickerbocker double that was given to my grandfather and was sold when he passed anybody know how common these are and how much i would be able to pick one up for. also some quality side by side companys that sell at a working mans price would be appreciated.

The knickerbocker shotguns were sold at hardware stores, and there's very very little collector value to them. IF you can find one (IF) you'll be good to pay $200 or less for a shootable one.
New SxS doubles at a working man's price, you'll be looking at Baikal, CZ, Huglu, Stoeger, ect.

The Baikals or the Rem import version are solid guns, heavy, affordable. The CZ's have some very nice finishing, cost a bit more. The Stoegers are nice. I've handled them all, wouldn't be unhappy with any of them.
A used Red Label or Beretta will cost over a thousand, way more than the obove.
