I was wondering if any one would now whats the price this gun is going for now a days. This gun is in perfect condition. I have not put a round through it in over 10 years and I am just looking to see if anyone might know its value.
I have a Aimpoint mounted on it as well right now.......

It's a weird barrel length, so it should bring a premium.
If you'll send me the Serial # by PM, I'll look up the manufacture date and get you a close enuff price.

The 10 5/8" version was offered for longe range competion and was known as the "Silouette". It's a "full target" setup(wide trigger/hammer) and also has an adjustable front sight for more elevation. These are pretty hard to find and are sought after by Smith collectors. My dad sold one at Court Day's in Mt Sterling two years ago and I'm thinking he got 600 for it. So, to the right person, I'd say you could get 700 or so for yours. just my .02

Yea, that adjustable front sight (if present. I've seen them with and without) would be the kicker as far as price is concerned. In the last two years, Smith collector prices have skyrocketed. If the condition is good, has matching grips, and the box is with it, 4 figures won't be out of the question.
Still, the manufacture date and lot will be the most telling factor.

The front sight we're talking about is alot different than a normal ramp "target" sight.
This is the only picture I could find of one:

It's on the upper left corner gun.
I'll look your SN up tonight, and let you know.

Yes thats it...
It has the four set screws and thumb wheel for changing the elevation for the different ranges that are set..
The gun is just stock factory blued with factory grips...
No box but looks as good as the day I got it back in 1986...

If you've got the box, it's going to bring arround $1000.00 if it's the condition you state.
No box, probably $700ish.
Funny thing is that the box will probabably sell for $350 by it's self. They're real hard to come by, and guys wanting to have the "complete set" will pay out the ear for them since no other proper box will fit the gun.

Serial #?
Are you saying "Dirty Harry" as some kind of commemorative that is specifically marked on the gun, or is it just what you call it when it's tucked in at night?

Thanks for the info......
I have yet to sell any gun that I have bought....
The way I look at is after the initial investment they do not cost a dime.....
But the info sure is good to know...

Its in excellent condition a smith 29 with the long dirty harry barrel. Are these worth more than the newer ones when Smith changed hands a few years ago? Does Smith still sell model 29s blued like the older ones? If so anyone know the current price?

There are about 200 different variations of Smith and Wesson Model 29. I know of at least 14 major engineering changes with TONS of sub variations of each change. To accurately give you any indication of value, I need to know the EXACT model number (i.e. pre-model, Model 29, Model 29-1, Model 29-4, etc.) and the first half of the SN. The model will be stamped inside the crane. Also, I assume you mean 6.5" barrel length? There were several guns used by Dirty Harry in the movie, including a model 57, a model 25, and another model 29 with an 8 3/8" barrel.
I was able to get by without an exact model # on Bucksnbugs' gun because the odd barrel length and SN tipped me off.

That's a whole lot to answer.. But, generally yes (condition dependent).
Does Smith still sell model 29s blued like the older ones? If so anyone know the current price?
Yes. Smith and Wesson currently produces a line called "Classic" that includes the Model 29. The big differences that you will see are that the blue is not the same super deep polish that was available 30-40 years ago, there is a lock beside the cylinder latch (ugh), and they're using different wood for the grips.
These have actually been available in the Performance Center shop for a number of years, and they don't come cheap.. MSRP from smith on the blued 6.5" models is $1240 for blued and $1335 for nickel. You'll see them in stores for between $900-1100. Good news on these is that a lot of guys buy these and shoot them. I found one used in SUPER shape in a local gunshop the other day for $650ish.

Nice revolver. Good luck with it. :D I sold mine in 92. Had the 8 3/8" bbl and was all blued with those great wood grips. Also sold the sister .357 then. Both great revolvers.

I have the 8 and 3/8 blued Model 29 in a wooden presentation box, unfired, I bought in 1977. I also had a 8 and 3/8 Model 57 .41 mag in a wooden presentation box, unfired, bought 1977, that I like a lunatic traded for a 7mm mag rifle. Wish I had it back. I'm leaving the 44 to one of my grandsons.

Westkybanded thanks for the info and sorry not to follow up as I thought this thread died on the vine! My Smith 29 is a 29-5 BPC is the first half of the serial number.a nd it is an 8 and 3 eighths barrel. thanks for everyones help. My gun also has a great blueing job with deep luster. Almost like a mirror. You dont see that kind of blueing on regular guns anymore for sure. The only thing I dont like about the gun is the thin cylinder walls.(and topstrap} I refrain from shooting real hot loads in the gun. Now my Ruger blackhawk is the gun for that.

Just thought of another reason why so many 44.s are out there the recoil!! If you dont reload to tame the loads they do hurt if you shoot a lot; Of cource you could buy 44 specials i didnt think of that!

Yes, the blackhawk is a bit stronger frame, but I wouldn't hesitate to shoot any published load through that model 29. It's by no means a weak frame.
As far as yours goes, I don't have my reference book with me to get an aproximate date, but I'll check it later. The 29-5 was an 80's model if I remember correctly, and it was arround the same time that the full-lug barrels came out and everyone wanted to look like Colt.
Or... I could be completely off base and it was made yesterday.. It's early.

WEIRD...
That BPC code you gave puts the manufacture date as somewhere between March-October of 93.
Double check that. Also, what does the barrel say? Magna Classic, Classic, DX, ect?

Ok Westkybanded could have been 93 My memory aint what it used to be! It just says Smith & Wesson on one side and 44 Magnum on the other Just like in the beginning of Magnum Force movie with Clint. No warning on barrel either. Hey sure appreciate the help! If I can help you on any reloading If you reload let me know , been doing it for 28 years along with casting my own bullets! I bought it new for $360 or so.

You made a fine investment at $360.00. You've more than doubled your money!
I bought this one about a week ago for $600.00. 6 1/2" barrel
It has the owners manual and all of the papers.
