I have one of the 25lb automatic feeders, that drops down when he needs more food, went to add some to it today, and ants were EVERYWHERE, is there a safe way to keep them out of there?

Wish I knew! We have more ants this year than I've ever seen. They are in the walls ,the ceiling , everywhere. I've sprayed, put out granules and traps and nothing seems to work.

My mom waters him during the week, she can do it from outside the pen, he has a big metal bowl

like glen said,,,,ants are a real big problem this year,,the worst i have ever seen,,,,,,only thing i know that works is get the granule terro and put it around,,,,we use the terro inside the house the liquid kind and it works good,,,
This is gonna sound strange, but buy a low lipped water pail the feeder can sit in but still work. Fill the pan with water so that it does not touch the food, but creates a barrier for the ants. Your mother can check this and fill it up too.

build a chute of some sort so your mother can dump the food in a funnel or something like that from outside the pen and it comes out into a food bowl. I think something like this would be pretty good. Maybe use a pipe with a 3" id and some type of cone at the top to prevent food spillage when it is dumped in .

I heard a fellow claim that cornmeal would kill an ant colony. They are supposed to not be able to digest it and they all die.
Cheap and easy to try.

I've heard that a circle of salt works well for keeping slugs out, and witches too. :D Might work on ants?

A couple tablespoons full in a 2 gallon sprayer will rid you of ants, spiders, termites, ticks, fleas, wood borers and just about any other insect that has pissed me off around camp or the house...........
Best pesticide I have ever seen.......;)

Grits. Like cornmeal it sounds "corny". But, it works. I learned when I lived in Alabama. Fire ants were really bad. Broad casted grits in the yard and pored them right on top of the ant hills. Worked every time.
I still use them when ever I want to get rid of ants.
Theory is they eat them and the grits absorb the moisture from the ants body, inturn, killing them. The worker ants will bring the grits back to the colony, destroying the whole colony.
It's a cheap try. I've used it around my dog pens and works well for me.
I don't know which is better, instant or regular, I've always just used regular.

I have used several granular pesticides for ants......They all have worked....
The basic principal is to bait an area the ants are using and they will carry the poison back to the colony and wipe it out.........
Just go to the local hardware or garden supply and find one........

I wouldn't recommend this, it will probably cause more ants and attract flies.:D

Grits don't work. Pouring them on top of a hill just clogs up the hill and makes them move.
It's an old wive's tale that has been debunked.

Well I stand corrected, all I've been doing is making them move to another location, either way, I got the results I was wanting. The ants moved.
So.. grits don't kill. Think I'll cook up a batch, making me hungry.:D

We have a dog in our barn and get ants occasionally. The best way is to make a moat for the ants to die in. A large shallow tray filled with water, then the feed pail inside. We've also put a couple drops of dish detergent in the water to keep it somewhat fresh and keep him from drinking too much of it. Probably helps kill the ants too.

MM
