Hey guys well I got permisstion to hunt a place last year pretty good place overall I guess but I cant use a centerfire. I got a muzzloader and its ok but I don't really care for having to haul everything around you know what I mean? So Ive thought about getting a slug gun.. I already have a 870 super mag sps camo model so I guess I could just get a slug barrel for that but wanted to see if anybody has used those little H&Rs etc or any other cheap type of slug gun? Anybody have a rifled barrel or choke tube?? How do you like it and what sights or scope do you use?? Thanks!!

I own a Browning 20 ga. Gold Sug Gun, which is NOT a cheap shotgun, but is very accurate with Remington Buckhammer slugs. My suggestion would be to buy a rifled slug barrel for your present shotgun, and also buy a good scope like a Leupold 2 to 7 power "Shotgun" scope. Those single shot slug gun are okay but they kick like the devil, especially in 12 gauge.

I don't own an H&R slug gun, but those Ultra Slug Hunters are a very accurate gun. They will be as accurate or better than most others. If I was looking for a dedicated slug gun, I would not hesitate to buy one.

I shoot an H&R slugster. With the right slugs it'll put em in a tea cup all day at 100 yards.I also shot a Browning 11-87, as hoosier said they aint cheap,Both guns really like Winchester 23/4 High Impact slug but they are hard to find.I here good reports about Remingtons buckhammer and will try them later.Buying a barrel for your 870 is a good idea but make sure you buy barrel with cantilever barrel.Thats where the scope is attached to the barrel and not the receiver.Much better and more consistent accuracy.Spend at least as much for good scope because the recoil will distroy cheap scopes.Buy a rifled barrel now or later because you want be happy with accuracy of slick barrel.Rifled chokes are not much better than slick barrels and the backpressure when that slug hits the tube is great. What does that mean? Well slug guns kick enough but with rifled tubes they knock the snot out of you.
Good luck and good hunting.

Ive look into getting one of the cantaliver barrels thats fully rifled but by the time I do it (from where ive looked at) and get a scope its going to be like over 400 bucks although I have seen fully rifled barrels cheaper I guess but thats just what I found on cabelas. So I figured I could prob find a slug hunter for cheaper?

Thats true you can buy a slugster for about same price of some barrels.Something else to think about is 20 gauge.Smaller slug but still plenty enough for any animal in north america, with lot less recoil. My next slug gun will be 20 gauge.
Good hunting

Check out page 2 of the classifieds on this forum. There is a new slug barrel for an 870 with cantilever in APG camo for 135.00. Here's a link if it works.

Yeah I noticed that strutter but I figured by the time I put a scope on it (atleast a good one) it would still end up being about 300?

Ash, you need to jump on that, its a steal for factory barrel.New slugster probablly $225-$250 maybe more.Your going to need scope either way you go.So that Remington barrel is cheapest way out.

Every H&R shotgun I've ever fired in a 12 gauge has kicked the heck out of me. I'm not the biggest fan but they do get the job done!:D
