I have a four door long bed V6 2005 4x4 Tacoma. Over the past few month I have had a few small dent show up on the truck all the size of a quarter/fifty cent size. One has a small scratch inside the dent from loading a boat in the back. I have 91,000 miles on the truck now never had a minutes problem out of it besides finding tires that it liked. I have had the rotors turned once and done general oil change maintenance. Is it time to sell the truck? I am happy with it but bought it new and don't want to sell it if money is not right. I do not have any problems showing up with it but it is at a point where I am guessing it is time to change/replace brakes, shocks, plugs, and general overall tune up. Do you have any suggestions with maintenance, resale, keep or not keep, etc. Money is not an issue with the truck it will be paid for at the end of this summer. Just have some wonders on what you suggest or think...thanks

I think my brothers has 237,000 miles on it the other day when I asked and he has had very litle issues with it. Mileage is all you are buying when you get a vehicle. You almost have it paid for with very low miles on it. Keep the truck, it's soon to be paid off. Then drive it another 200,000 miles payment free. Sounds like a great idea!!!
Edit: But If you do selll, please buy another Toyota. Job security for me!!!!!

I've driven all of the big 3 and my Toyota is the best truck I have owned. My buddies are starting to buy Toyotas now. When a guy I went to school with sold his it had over 300,000 and not a major problem. They build a great truck and the 4wd is out of this world. I can't say enough. With only 91,000 on it thats a very new Toyota. The re-sale is very high on those trucks...

You all keep buying those toyota's, I guess you never seen the news special of the frames rusting into.... I'll keep a Ford, at least I know where it was built and who made it.....

I'll prolly never buy one, but if a frame hasn't rusted through in 200-300,000 miles, I'd say you got your money's worth.;)

Toyota said they only have this problem in places that they use salt on the road. I can understand how they were blindsided by this.

mine 95 tacoma has over 200k miles and hasnt had a screww turned except for stuff i've caused.the only thing i've done to it was put a set of springson it from pulling to big a trailer with a farm tractor on it and broke some leafs.i say keep it and drive it,but if you do decide to sell it i'll look at it to buy.;)
I would not sell it. That's low miles for a Tacoma. My old one (that I sold to my neighbor) has about 130,000 and has never seen the shop. I know several people with well over 200K on theirs.
The early models do have an issue with frame corrosion, BUT as far as I know, Toyota is offering a warranty until 2013 on them, all the way back to the 1995 model. They give you back 150% of the book value if your truck doesn't pass. Try getting another manufacturer to stand behind their product like that.;)

Why get rid of a truck that has at least another 100,000 miles left in it? Get your money's worth out of it!

Brake pads and spark plugs are not that expensive and very easy to replace. You shouldn't have to even mess with the shocks. Pay no attention to the UAW loyalists. Your Toyota will be running long after those other makes have been dragged to the salvage yard.
I say keep it. Do the tune up work. It's a lot cheaper than several years of new vehicle payments. And if you've ever had to pay Kentucky's criminal vehicle tax, then you surely know the financial disadvantages of putting that little yearly sticker on a newer vehicle.
One thing I would do at this point is change all the fluids under the truck. Change your timing belt, too. Go to a Toyota service dept that you trust on that though. Chances are they will get in there to the timing belt and tell you that your water pump is leaking, even if it's not, trying to stick you with a higher repair bill. Don't ask me how I know.:D

I guess you never heard of all the problems ford has. Oh well I will buy another toyota and I will support american workers when do I so and I will feel proud because I did. Ford Quality is job one in mexico:rolleyes:.
Anyways to the original poster. I would keep it and drive that thing. If it's payed for then why make payments.

i know what you mean,i only gave 13,500 for mine when i bought it in 2000,took it to get it checked for the recall and they will give me 10,500 for it now,9 years and over 150k miles later. if i only had a job to make the rest of the payments on a new one.

When I buy a vehicle, I make sure to only buy one made in the USA. Not a vehicle from an American company built in Mexico or Canada. My car was built in Ky. and my truck (Tacoma) was built in Washington State. I feel better supporting American workers than I would supporting Mexicans.

If you're not tired of the truck, keep it and run it until the wheels fall off, then put some more wheels on it and run it some more. Us Americans think a vehicle is worn out when it has 150,000 on it but that's not true anymore, especially with Toyota's. I'm a car dealer here is Colorado and I broker a lot of new Toyotas. They are fantastic vehicles and the Tacoma is one of, if not the best truck ever built for longevity. Just change the oil on a regular bases and they tend to keep going to well over 200,000 miles. I always tell my new Toyota customers, I need you to send me referrals, because after selling you this Toyota it'll be 10 plus years before I sell you another one. They just don't wear out, like we Americans are use to.

What is this deal with rust frame? Where do you take it and is the 2005 year model part of this?

There are good and bad vehicles in every brand that is made,
I have owned 14 different Toyotas, I've had better luck with Toyotas than any of the other vehicles that I've owned. The last Tacoma I owned, I drove it for 3 years an put 100k on it and sold it for the same amount that I gave for it.
3 yrs. + 100k = free:D

Ford F-150 built in Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan and the Kansas City Assembly Plant.
Tacoma built in Tijuana, Mexico and Fremont, California while the plastic/composite beds are all built in Mexico.

I say keep it. Its mighty nice to not have a truck payment. No reason you can't get another k out of it. My S-10 has a 152k and has had a few minor issues but still runs ike a champ. It really doesn't matter what brand you buy anymore you can get about 200k out of any vehicle these days.
With that being said I will not own a toyota. Just don't like their trucks they are just not for me. Even though they are made in "America" that money don't stay in America, and that is enough for me not to buy one. Each to there own, but I am a GM guy and will be buying one no matter what happens to the company.

I would keep it and drive on for another 100k. I had a 1999 Tacoma that had 234k with out any problems. I sold it in 2006 and bought a new one.

My 2004 F-150 FX4 has a new engine put in back in October 2008 for $7200. The old engine had 94500 miles on it when it broke a value spring and drop into the piston. My other truck is a 2006 Tacoma with 90000 miles and no problems. I like the Toyota better.

Do whatever you feel like and you will be fine. I've had 3 different toyota trucks. Two were as reliable as an anvil and the third was an absolute lemon - blown head gasket, catalytic converter, weird electrical gremlins, and body rust-through all in less than 50,000 miles over three years. Everyone makes lemons.

i was going to buy a new tundra last year when i bought my f150,,,,toyota wasn't going to give me but 1500 for a 2001 frontier as trade in excellent condition,,,then they was only going to go down 1000 off the sticker,,,,so that was 2500 off sticker,,,,,,told them to stick the sticker,,,,,,,so i went over to paducah ford and got the $22,000 f150 for 13500 difference,,,,,,,it was built in detroit,,,,,,,,,now trust me,,,,if i could have afforded the toyota or even the big nissan,,i would have gone that way,,,,,i know from years of turning the wrench they will go 300000 with no problems,,,if you take good care of them,,,,,,i have seen toyota trucks that was pushing 400000 with no major issues,,,,91000 is just broke in,,,,,drive it,,,,,,
