Any thoughts? I'm nervous, as I'm not rich and have never bought a gun before, have only shot my dad's.

Tarus makes a solid gun for the price and it's hard to beat a 1911.

Taurus pistols (both revolvers and auto's) are typically reliable and bargain priced. I've had a few revolvers over the years, and can recommend them. The semi-auto's are supposed to be good also.

I really like mine. I have had no trouble out of it or the other 3 Taurus pistols I own.

Great choice, CD!
I've shot pretty much everything out there, but love the 1911. And taurus makes a good solid unit.

When I worked at a gun shop we sold lots of taurus units and only had one or to come back with complaints and The company handled them very promptly. I would have no problems with owning one.

I'd start with a Taurus revolver. It's a little easier to get into handguns with a simple, dependable revolver. Autos are great, but a little harder to get a handle on.
A Taurus 38 with a 4 inch barrel is a great choice.

I've shot my dad's .44 magnum and .38 off and on for about 15 years now. I'm not that great of a shot with them. My grandfather owned a security company and gun shop in Florida so I tried out lots of different ones, and the only thing I was really accurate with was a 1911, so I've been wanting one ever since. He has been recommending the Taurus, but he's a bigger gun nut than anybody I've ever met and knows what he's doing, where I don't.

I've never had a problem out of mine.
Even if you did Taurus has a lifetime warranty and they are EXTREMELY good at the customer service thing.

I have a Taurus PT1911 and it's performed flawlessly for about 4K rounds now. I have nothing but good to say about it.

Only other question I have left is should I get one that has the tactical rail or not?

Eh, why not?
Can't hurt anything.

It's a little heavier on the front end and I wasn't sure if the size would limit any holster options.

getting the rail will limit your holsster selections. but there are plenty available for either one you chose.
