Well I used to be a trapper.

I just thought it was a little sad to have no trapping posts. I have been thinking lately about trying another season of trapping just for old time sake. It is a lot of work though, boiling traps, running sets, etc.......I bet the Wily Red is still lingering in my old bronco from over 20 years ago, wherever it may be. Wives just don't have much appreciation for Wily Red.
I don't have any traps left. Gave them to my cousin about 15 years ago. I would like doing it again, but time is hard to come by anymore. I was doing some coon trapping around Lexington (shhhhh[:D]).
It sure ain't about $$$ anymore. A shame we have lost so many trappers.

I like trapping rabbits with home made traps such as a whole in the ground with a big metal stake in the middle sticking up. The rabbits will walk on the cloth that i lay on the top of the trap and fall in. Instant rabbit stew!!![:D]

Looks like the Dept. could spend a little time and effort toward promoting trapping, helping to establish a viable market, anything but just standing on the sidelines and watching it slip away.

F&W is not interested in promoting trapping. Read topic ,
Is F&W "Pricing" kids out of trapping?? $$17.50 trapping license is required for a 10-year old to set a trap to catch a rabbit![:(!]

I started to show my 15-year old how to carve a trigger out of three sticks for a box trap and darned if I hadn't forgotten how. ( just been about 35 years I guess) Does anyone have a plan or a link to an on-line plan. This is embarrassing!
Make it like the # 4. The back part holds the lid.

I don't really see anything that the Dept. could do to resurect trapping from what it was. There's too many things changed to make it viable to spend any money on it. Hell, we import coyotes and coons, yu think they want somebody to catch them? Unless hide prices return to normall levels, nobody in their right mind would spend the time and money it takes to trap. Plus, with the private land issues changing, it's that much harder to find a spot. It's a lost art????

Does anyone have any info on our state association? I haven't saw them at any conventions or in any magazines. If we could get the association to put out a little more info, possibily a magazine or newsletter, then I think that would bring some interest to trapping.

They were at the LOKS Convention just last week. I don't have any contact info, but know they still have the fur sale in E-town each year.

The KY Furtakers came to the LKS 6th Federation Family Fun Days that was held 2 weekends ago. I hope to have a contact address soon to send them a BIG "Thank You". These guys did one heck of a good job. They set up several displays, were kids could look, feel and handle pelts. Their next booth was a display of "set" traps, and they finished up with someone talking one/one to folks as to the necessity of trapping.
They did a GREAT job. Kids and adults too, left with an appreciation for what these folks do. I would love seeing them guys on here.

I haven't been to any conventions around here but they haven't been at the last few NTA conventions that I know of. I know they weren't at Mansfield, didn't go to Illinois last year but my brother said that he didn't see them. From what you say it sounds like they are doing more than I thought, should have done more research I guess.

Trappers numbers are on the rise! The thing that drives the numbers is MONEY, not promotion. Fur prices have really rebounded the last couple years with averages from last year- red foxes $25-30; grays $15-20; raccoons $10-15; beaver ~$20; and coyotes $15-25. And otters $100-150! Thank goodness for our first otter season in west KY this fall.
The first-ever trappers' education course is to be conducted at Jefferson County Sportsmans Club on August 7th. It will be put on by the Kentucky FurTakers Organization and will be an 8 hours course. I'm helping gather names for the event, so PM or email me (kdfwr310@hotmail.com) me if you have anyone interested. Or contact the Kentucky FurTakers, President Paul Brown (502) 969-7119.

Warden is exactly right. If trapping is profitable again, there will be trappers. When it's not profitable, subsidize it.
BTW, can anyone explain why we spend money to help people have a nice fishing pond, then spend money to release river otters that decimate fishing ponds, then open a season to control the otters because they are decimating fishing ponds? An otter pelt represents more than $150 to anyone who has ever found all the fish in his pond scattered around the bank in the form of chewed-off heads.

Know what you mean. Had a landowner who spent thousands on fertilizer and lime to help his lake, only to have 3 otters move in this winter. We had to shoot 2 of the larger ones and trapped the smallest. They ate a whole school of big slab crappie, a channel cat and a 5 lb. largemouth bass.
They are everywhere in my area and we can't trap any!
