It's been a tough season for me so far. I still have not heard a bird gobble. Not even one on the roost. It's weird. I've saw 20 birds. 2 Toms that hung up, 8 hens, and 10 jakes. I called in 8 jakes opening morning and haven't had a bird in range since.
Well, yesterday morning I got in and setup in a grown up fence row on the edge of a wheat field. There were hens cutting all around in the woods all morning. Couldn't get a gobble though. I was calling infrequently, not trying to overdo it. I started getting a little sleepy, so I decided to scoot down a little and rest for a few minutes while I was waiting. Well, no sooner than I did, 2 birds came out in the corner of the field about 200 yards away. I couldn't tell what they were. Well, I was out of position and couldn't do anything so I just sat there while they picked around for a few minutes and went back in the woods. Then I got up and got in position. I let out an aggressive series of yelps and shut up for a few minutes and then let out another and shut up. A couple minutes later they both stepped back out strutting with heads solid red. I still didn't know if they were Toms or Jakes. I clucked a couple times and put the call down. They came in on a string. When they closed the gap about 2/3's of the way, I realized they were jakes. But, I didn't care. They got in range and 2 oz. of number 5's at the 25 yards laid one down without a flop. The other stayed around for about 20 minutes while I was putting my calls up and getting my gear together. Finally, I got up and he was about 100 yards away and he trotted off into the woods.
He wasn't very big, but I had a good hunt. My grandpa died 3 hours later to the minute. I don't know if I will get a chance to hunt anymore. But, hunting is one thing that brings me peace so I may try to get out some in a couple days.
