To those familiar with my surprise kill at my duck hunting spot Tuesday afternoon, another stunner kill. This time it was my son Joey(19). Riding around Thursday afternoon late, we spotted another gobbler strutting up against the woods around 7pm. This bird had 2 visible hens & was approximately 600 yds west of where i killed the Tuesday bird. We had planned to get in a flash hunt Friday morning before he had to be at work at 7:30 but he decided against that(fri morn at 3:30am). Said he wanted to be able to enjoy a kill, not have to run to the truck to get to work. So, we get there this morning and as soon as the first ribbon of light in the east showed, i stepped away from the truck & hooted! Nothing.. Again a few minutes later and again...nothing! We thought about simply standing there and wait for one to gobble. But i decided he had bess get loaded up, head on in the direction we saw him Thursday pm. Good thing we did. As we neared a point, he gobbled around the bend at perhaps 120yds. With seeing lite beginning to take over, i told Joey we needed to put out the jake decoy i borrowed just for this hunt & a hen..NOW! As soon as we stepped into the field, a hen...then another & soon 5 hens had flown down less than 75 yds from us. I told Joey we need to get set down quickly. I know, even in the dim light, the birds should probably see us, so we bent over like deer, walk like deer & slip inside the woods. Joey sits just 4 steps inside & me behind about 5 steps. Not Ideal, but things were happening very quickly, & very early. I hadn't much more than slipped on the first glove when the bird gobbled down the side not 60yds. That was good, at least he wasn't out in the field with the hens yet! I made a call with my Rutnstrut glass call & he gobbled again but i think it was irrevelant, he done spotted the jake decoy & here he come, in full strut, dragging wings. Sounded like a plow behind a tractor! He was pissed! He was also marching to the grave! Just inches from the jakes decoys face, the ole boy got punched. Unbelievable...and at 5:47am! The earliest kill in 20 seasons i had ever been involved in! My son & I whooped & hollored!! Man, it was just so awesome!! Beard was 10 inches, but a nice one. 22.7 lbs & 1" spurs!!

congrats to your son! Nothing like a vocal showdown at daylight. I had hens coming from every direction this morning. No gobbles at all until 745am when i decided to play whos the boss hen. haha 4 jakes and 1 nice tom came 70 yrds only to be spooked by a motorcycle coming out of no where. I cant believe all the hens this year. IMO theyre nowhere near bred down.

Tell joey if he shaves his beard and grows his hair out he will pass as Tiffany's twin...I shoot on the archery team with Tiffany by the way. Congratulations on a nice bird.
