Hospitals can't function without insurance money, people without jobs can't afford insurance premiums.....and they sure as hades can't afford the bills on their own.......so it snowballs....
I remember seeing a bill from our local hospital after my son was born 15 years ago. He was 4 days old, and had just came home. That night he started running a high temp., so we took him back to the hospital.....the Dr. thought it may be meningitus and sent him to Lexington. But, before the ride to Lexington, they gave him a few drops of Tylenol infant drops for the fever. I saw them give it to him, it was the same bottle of drops that I could buy at any store. I got the bill a few weeks later and just about crapped my pants....They charged me $38.00 for that little tiny bottle of Tylenol.......it was under $5.00 off the shelf anywhere you looked at that time! I my honest opinion.....this kind of legal STEALING is why this country is in the shape it is now....;)
I talked to a fellow last year who was air lifted to the hospital once, 8 minute ride......$15,000. Recently its got me to pondering on the subject of.....whats a life worth?
It's easy to forget, but hospitals are businesses too and can be run poorly and fall on hard times or even go under. Luckily there is such a need for all things in the medical profession that it's pretty easy to find work just about anywhere.

Now you know a way they help pay for all that "FREE" treatment they give to people.

I agree with part of that. I also say we are being gouged for every penny in our pockets by modern day thieves. Seems around here if you get a bloody nose in a fender bender, they send the new helicopter to transport you to the hospital...........that air ride ain't cheap.

My dad was in the hospital in Feb. and they gave one bottle of Flonase that cost 20 bucks at the local pharmacy and when he got his hospital bill, they charged him 350 bucks for a little bottle.

I was just reporting what was told on the news not 15 minutes before I posted that.
The additional numbers on top of the 39 are supposedly open positions that will not be filled.

Regardless, Lourdes is not the only hospital that the economy is taking a toll on. My wife works for PHCMC and I get to hear about it nightly as well.

When people's disposable income dries up, they quit running to the ER and hospital for every stubbed toe and hangnail that they get.
A lot of the hospitals around here have seriously expanded in the last 5 years and spent money like it grew on trees in an effort to keep up with the Joneses. I have little doubt that they are probably heavy on employees and facilities now.

My wife works in the ER at a childrens hospital. They only way her job would be in jeopardy would be if they took passport away from all of the welfare recepients!

Lourdes has over 1300 employees according to what they advertise so 39, 65 or whatever the real number is, is only scratching the surface.
Not to make light of the layoff but that is a drop in the bucket compared to what some industries outside of healthcare are doing. My company is about 50% smaller than it was this time last year.

I view modern day health care in this country as a VERY expensive luxury item, luxurys tend to go in times like these.

Unless........ your one of the 39 or 65........then it cuts pretty deep. The old saying goes.......Its a recession when the neighbor loses their job, its a depression when you lose yours.

My wife and I both work in the health care field and see all kinds of crap that makes us want to puke. Most of the hospitals in our area seem to cater toward the ones who won't pay never had intention of paying and don't mind using all the service's they can. The hospital my wife works at wants them to clock out even if they aren't done doing what needs to be done and expect them to stay and do it anyway.
There short on staff with no relief in sight and here lately lunch is only about 10 min and the only break they get is when they sit down to use the bathroom.
I'm not even going into detail of the crap I encounter everyday.
You know they push for this socialized health care crap all everyday. When in fact we already have that anyway. We pay for the ones who don't or can't. I don't want to sound like a prick because some people honestly try and just can't make it and I beleve they need the help. There is not a problem with our health care system the problem is we pay for those who have no intention on trying to help themselves and expect it to be given for nothing there for driving up the costs for those who can and will pay.

You guys want to see a real waste of tax payer $$ in healthcare, just go take a tour of any federal prison. The healthcare these guys get is equal if not better than what John Q taxpayer gets and it cost them nada!! If they go to sick-call (office visit for you/I) it costs them $2!!! Medications are free and the narcs these guys get for chronic pain issues would drop a horse dead in their tracks!!! It's amazing.:confused:

So should they not get any medical attention? You take a person's freedom away and you are responsible for them just like a child. Personally, I'd rather be free and pay the bill myself.

or many nursing homes. Minor fever? Fractured finger?Nurse fed up with a patient? Ship um to the hospital. $600 round trip ambulance fee minimum + who knows the doc and hospital costs. Happens allllll the time, and it sure adds up. Any medicare/medicaid patients essentially have free health care which is certainly taken major advantage of at every worker's expense.

Many people in prison are in because they (shockingly!) have mental issues. It's a tough subject, but the amount medications which are dispensed in prison are shocking. We've all seen the tv shows showing the med lines.
We can't deprive them of medical treatment and I'm not sure there is a good solution to cut costs
